I read somewhere that the world queer was used against LGBT+ but.. I used it on daily basis. If I would have to search my label for my gender it will be hard same with my sexuality. I usually say "I am an unicorn" or "I am queer" But when I told that to a friend that happens to be gay he said "Why would you be mean to yourself?" To be honest the worst thing that someone can use against me is the pronoun "it" which has happened and that hurts.

It's totally fine to reclaim a slur. A label that you use for yourself can no longer be used to hurt you. Just don't use it for others without permission I guess? For me "it" feels good, but I wouldn't use it for someone else unless they ask for it.

Genderqueer is a term many people use for themselves. I think queer is a bit less common still in the LGB community but it seems to be relatively common for transfolk. If you are comfortable with the word, go for it. You cerainly would not be alone in using it in a positive way!

I was born in 1953 and grew up with the word "queer" being a very derogatory term, on the same level as the "n" word or the "f" word. That's how it was. Over time, I've become more comfortable with it as long as it's not used derogatorily. For me, it's more about how you say something as opposed to what you say but I'm still not comfortable with the other two!

I use it for myself as I have no other word that really "fits" me. Trans is close enough, but even then it doesn't really cover the full spectrum of what I am. Since it's hard for me to define my ever-evolving sexuality, and since my gender identity is a bit fluid (though mostly on the trans masculine side), it's hard for me to say "Oh, I'm trans" or "I'm gay/bi/etc". Because one word doesn't really cover it. I'm trans, and that's that, but because I'm trans my sexuality is so very hard to define (especially since I'll probably never transition... I'm not straight as I'm not a woman, but I don't feel gay as I'm not a cis man and feel weird claiming that word... then again, I am still somewhat attracted to women, too?). See, very confusing. So, queer seems to work.
I would never call someone else queer unless that was the label they themselves used. The same way I would never call someone gay, dyke (I know many lesbians that have reclaimed that one), transgender, transsexual, lesbian, etc unless that was the label they chose. Only we can choose our labels.

Screw em. Calling anyone a label in a deragotory way is so 3rd grade. They are judgemental haters. I'm me and I am as I am. Queer? Sorry hon, it comes natural for me.

So, it's totally about what someone identifies themselves as. Don't assume and project a term towards someone because it could be misgendering them in one case or mislabeling them in another.
But what I have surprisingly learned recently is that there are many terms that I personally would have never used that I guess have been reclaimed and people do identify with. Today I learned that "Dykes on Bikes" is a real and wonderful organization. I would have never said that about anyone. But they have chosen to reclaim the term. Dara Hoffman-Fox did a video part of which was identifying as Queer, I think that's current. I'm not sure what Dara identified as previously. |

I hate the word and hate that it's being treated as an umbrella term.
Reclaim it for yourself all you want. But I can't stand when people use it to refer to me and essentially try to reclaim it on my behalf. |
