I'm not sure if there's ever a total "cure" for any mental illness. However, we can learn to live with what we have...learn coping skills and perhaps take medications that help.
I have OCD that has been in remission for several months, and it's great. It took a lot of hard work, but it is achievable. What was once crippling is now usually harmless. ![]() |

The only things that have helped are the right meds, and lowering and dealing with my stressors. The higher the stress, the worse the OCD. My meds keep me from being housebound with OCD, but that's it. It still rules my life with an iron fist, right along with my bipolar.

I don't know about "cure" but I think, like depression, it can be in remission for a long time/"forever". It's an anxiety "symptom" and if one deals with anxiety and learns how cope better, the conditions based on the anxiety can lessen too.

I think with the right doctors, medication and specific therapy(CBT) a person can mange it very well. I saw a pro football player with his doctor on Good Morning America. They showed a before video of him - he looked like a different person. He had to count to 1,500 just perfectly(many do overs) before doing any task, therefore he was barely functional.
His doctor put him on the right meds and therapy and now he's functioning well. They co-wrote a book together called "My Life In Rewind" by Michael Jenike and Edward Zines.

A medication that helps my anxiety greatly is Seroquel. I'm on a high dosage, but it can work at low doses as well.
Try to remember that it's not the thoughts we have that are bad, it's how we react to them. Somebody could see a tissue and react horribly, like it meant impending doom...same goes for anything else. Therapy really helps in showing us how to not react so badly to intrusive thoughts. |

There are no cures YET. That doesn't mean there won't be in the future. Anafranil was the medication that worked best for me, turning my life around. Unfortunately, a different doctor took me off the med, and it no longer works like it used to (or, the GENERIC doesn't work like Anafranil used to, because they no longer make Anafranil).
