I have kind of assumed I have had OCD tendencies for a while now, but haven't done anything about it because for the most part I have felt it has always been in control and just be being a bit weird - until around a year ago.
I used to get "bothered" by stupid little things, such as leaving the living room door open whilst watching telly - if somebody walked in/out the room I'd have to get up and close the door otherwise I wouldn’t be able to concentrate on whatever I was watching. If the door was left open, I would literally be unable to think of anything other than how much I wanted to close the door. But that didn’t really matter because it was just TV...
More recently I have had situations where during a conversation with someone who's opinion I care about I would say something and instantly regret it - usually a stupid choice of phrase or something that could accidentally be interpreted as offensive, and I would think of nothing else for hours (or maybe even days).

I seem to be totally possessed by the thoughts that I wish I could just turn off, most of which are tiny and pointless things (such as having to turn my computer back on and open/resave an excel file if I closed it without selecting cell A1 first!) but some are so overwhelming I have actually fallen to the floor because my mind was so occupied by going over the situation in my head that my brain appears to have forgotten to tell my legs how to walk.
I am on a quest to understand the foibles of my mind and would appreciate some advice - it is entirely probably that this is nothing like OCD and is just be being a fool!
Thanks for any advice
J

Just some friendly advice, take the adult attention deficit disorder quiz here on PC. I suffered with the same symptom for years that you have described. My niece who has ADD with OCD suggested I look into it. I have it and it has made a difference knowing. I didn't think I had it but I scored 98% on having it. This has helped me and my doctor know how to treat me. I have medical issues I have to deal with also.

Dear Jay,, i think you might be surprised at how meditation can help with those obcessive thoughts. if you can get to a meditation center, or even a DBT group, and start with Mindfulness training, that would be a good place to start. I have been Dx with OCD and Trich for 20 yrs, and finally, about 5 yrs ago, i was recommended to try this new technology called Center Point. it feeds a different tone in each ear by stereo headphones and CD's , and makes the brain reconnect the two sides. If you want more info, i'd be glad to chat with you about it, or you can go online to CenterPointe Research Institute.com. Best wishes,,, Gus

I took the test and scored 83... Seems likely I have something to read up on and talk with a professional!
