These past 2 weeks have been very hard for me. In counseling, I realized that all of the rituals that I do every day are not normal. For some reason I thought they were. My counselor gave me homework to write out all my rituals in detail to help me. It is extremely hard for me to do this. I feel so ashamed and I don't want to tell anyone about them. I want to stop doing these things (I have done them for years) but I feel like I can't stop. He keeps telling me it's a choice, but I don't feel like it is. I guess I am just a little frustrated. Any ideas on what I can do?

Work with your counselor on this. It's difficult when we first realize that something we are doing isn't really NORMAL & really is a problem even though we have been doing it for years without really having it bother us. It you truly want to stop doing those things, then you will follow through with your counselor's work on it. Everything we do is a choice.....even addictions & habits are a choice, but they are difficult to break & just take time & focus & determination.

I would tell myself that my life will be a lot easier without being chained to doing these things & that the sense of freedom will be well worth the work it takes & attack it with a positive, 'can do' attitude.

Rituals or compulsions are often done to make things feel 'safe.' If you can figure out why you need to do the ritual and or why you feel it makes things feel safer, then you have a starting block to beginning to let go of the ritual.
