Hello all;
For years, I've been twisting and pulling my hair on and off from a young age; (about 10 years old) up until recently it has become worse and now I'm starting to develop bald patches above my forehead. My mum has suggested that I go and get my haircut at the barbers but this might make a blad patch more noticeable because the hair above my forehead has become much thinner and if it gets cut, there could be a large bald patch that is noticeable amongst others. I looked up trichotillomania recently and I'm quite certain that I match some of the symptoms, and I want to overcome this issue before it gets even more serious than it is. What can be done to help stop this bad habit? What kind of techniques are out there? Who can I speak to? Many thanks Liam |

i would try therapy... trich is an anxiety disorder i think. unitl you can get to the underlying cause, it will be really hard to fix it. and a t can help you explore the source of the anxiety.

Also, I've developed a number of bad habits over the years and they've taken control of my mind to a point where I cannot change any aspect of myself or my personality; I find it difficult to use willpower and self-help techniques to resolve these issues. I'm not keen on the idea of having bald patches, I feel that it will have a significant impact on my confidence.

are these habits obsessions? because i wouldnt be surprised if you also had OCD, because the two can go together. definatley for OCD, you would want to see someone about it, because CBT is a given

I doubt that I have OCD, I've got Autism though; however to answer your question I don't think that my habits are obsessions.

no i meant its a given... as in CBT would be the most logical likely approach. "its a given" is a saying... sry for the miscommunication

hi ... checking with your general doctor to rule out any medical basis for the hair pulling and twisting might be useful as well as discussing this with a therapist to work out what is going on and the best way to help you. Often CBT does seem to be the recommendation for trichotillomania as miswimmy mentioned; there's also a separate forum on PC here where you might want to ask and also a lot of posts you may want to read through. Good idea trying to get help now with this

Knowing the cause of this anxiety would help a lot to try to stop this habit. I think also that a T would help you much to resolve this issue. And you have that habit since a while so I think you will need some professionnal help. |
