I'm going to a prom the 22nd, but I'm a little nervous. I have severe OCD and it's been pretty intense lately. I really want to go because I don't get out of the house much and I've been looking forward to this for weeks. I'm also going with my best friend who I haven't seen in a really long time.

I cannot stop washing my hands. I really, truly feel that I cannot stop. Someday a I can go a whole day only washing my hands 7-8 times a day, but it hasn't been that way lately. And the drier and more sore they get, the more I want to wash them. . I can go at most (on a good day) about an hour without washing. But I'm really nervous.

So anyways, I was just wondering if anybody had any tips? Thanks.

I assume you are in touch with a professional. Have you told him/her about these symptoms? What has been helpful in dealing with other compulsions?

Could it be that your anxiety about the upcoming prom might be making this situation occur?

I'm not sure if the prom is making my symptoms worse, but I've been experiencing these symptoms for the past eight months with little to no improvement. I am in contact with a professional, but they are absolutely no help.

Are you on any medications? I've gotten better partly because of various meds (Anafranil and Xanax are the most effective ones for me), but also because of resisting washing my hands when something minor happens (I'm still not able to resist if I bump or touch a "bad" area). It does get easier once you've gotten over the hump of anxiety that you have to deal with. (The meds help with the anxiety.)

I understand if you aren't on meds and don't want to go on them. I'm just saying they helped me, but there are side effects I don't like, too.

Can you put lotion on your hands? If that isn't a problem for your OCD, I suggest a good moisturizing lotion. I use Curel Ultra Healing Intensive Lotion for Extra-Dry Skin. If your skin is cracked, it will sting at first, but as your skin heals, it'll stop.

Hope you get to go to your prom! I know you're nervous, but try to focus on the fun you'll have.
