Hello. It's not the act of walking that I hate, it's the intrusive thoughts I get from walking. Every time I see a person or a car, intrusive thoughts pile into my mind. I get terrified and want to run away from it, but I can't. Compulsions don't help and probably make me look more "crazy" than people probably think I am. Walking and seeing people terrify me.
Well, it's mainly when walking by myself that it gets triggered. Or a not as familiar area (like I don't get triggered walking down my school's hallway). But I walk the same route by myself home at least once a week and I get these thoughts all the time. How do I help myself? Walking for me seems to equal bad intrusive thoughts. Thanks for your response ![]() Social anxiety disorder, GAD, OCD, and panic attacks Lexapro, 10 mg

Ah, that explains why being in unfamiliar surroundings causes such distress. Perhaps there are precautions which you could take to put your mind at ease? Pepper-spray, for example? It is also good to walk nearer to well-lit, populated areas. Does knowing that you are doing things to keep yourself safe help in any way?

Can you take another route and see if anything changes? |

Pepper spray is illegal in Canada unless it's for bears up north. I live in Canada so it's really safe and none of this would ever happen, that's why I know they are intrusive thoughts. Social anxiety disorder, GAD, OCD, and panic attacks Lexapro, 10 mg

![]() I'm kinda stuck here. I can't advise carrying weapons or learning martial arts if there is really no likely danger. Intrusive thoughts are one of the harder issues to overcome... just because you don't control those thoughts. They just kind of pop up out of nowhere. IIRC OCD can cause this. I assume you're being treated for that. When I have those thoughts I just roll with it. They are usually fleeting and for me at least they pretty much take long breaks. But my "bad thoughts" don't belong to any particular situation. They are more likely to come during times of higher anxiety levels. Does any of that sound familiar? |

You've posted about this before, were you doing ok or better with it for a while or has it been consistently bad?
I've got those same trigger fears coming back to me now because of upcoming changes in my life. But I was ok for a while. It's horrible to get it back. I hate being scared all the time. The mind is so inventive. This is the worst aspect of OCD for me. I'm sorry to hear what you're going through.
