Hi,
I have always had bouts of depression, sometimes severe, but I've never taken meds for it...just hard to take that step. But now, in addition, I'm struggling with obsessive thoughts. Not bad ones, but guilty ones. If I question a decision I've made or something I've done, I can't let it go. I keep questioning it out loud to my husband, until he eventually convinces me it's generally okay. I come from a family that has some ocd tendencies, so. Wonder if this is related. And since it's gotten worse lately, maybe because of life stressors, I'm wondering if there are meds for this. Is this something I can ask my family practitioner about? I just don't know where to start. But it feels like I'm going crazy and it won't get better.

Generally, the most effective treatments for OCD are behavior therapy and an SSRI drug (usually a higher dose is required to make obsessive thoughts go away) such as Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, etc. My psychologist warned me that obsessive thoughts do not always go away completely with drug therapy, however, because your body and mind stop responding to medication sometimes. That's when your psychiatrist will often change prescriptions, and when you must rely on coping skills you learn in therapy.

Specifically, the most effective behavior therapy for me was finding my compulsions and NOT acting out on them. My compulsion is to seek reassurance from others by talking about my worries/obsessions. If I keep myself from talking too much about my worries and obsessions, I learn how to handle it myself and it keeps me from feeding the obsessions. I also take Xanax as needed to calm the anxiety that comes with the obsessive thoughts. You can talk to your doctor about being prescribed something to calm you down when you have an episode of anxiety.

It can and will get better for you with proper help! It sounds like yours hasn't gotten too bad, but I'm sure you will feel a lot better with treatment. Good luck!
Thanks for this!

How come people in tribal communities don't go all OCD and get thoughts like this, what does our society do to people truly.you don't need meds for this you need cbt.
You have to medicate a sick society.

I lived and worked in tribal villages in the South Pacific, and people there def had compulsive rumination. People worried about sharks coming into the lagoon, about demons who dwell in the forest coming too close to the village, and about strange epidemics of headaches that caused people to walk around with bandanas and rags tied tightly on their heads. People are the same and tribal communities are not immune to mental disturbances. Their medicine is rituals.

I have tried Zoloft, it did have a numbing effect, like negative thoughts still popped in my head, but it wasn't overpowering I didn't really react to them as I would normally.

I did not stay on the meds long though as I felt like a zombie and my memory was terrible. It was like you were defunct of emotion.
Thanks for this!

ThNks for your comments! I have started on the road... I go to the dr tomorrow to update about how my first round of Rx is working. Mostly for depression...I will talk to her about the obsessive thoughts. It seems like a slow road.

I'm on Sertraline for my depression, anxiety, and OCD. Only just got onto it. It's not doing much for the thoughts, to be honest (although it's only the first week, so probably a bit too soon) but I've noticed a decrease in anxiety which can help lessen the thoughts or stop me getting carried away by them.
