I was just wondering if anybody else has problems with their ocd acting up while they are sick. I went to the doctor and my cold seems to have changed into bronchitis and my ocd is really acting up. Does anybody else ever get this? I have been doing things to lessen my anxiety which is helping but I didn't know if it's the illness causing it or maybe some of the new meds I am on.
This is a really pain because the ocd is mostly revolving around decluttering and reorganizing my house but I should be resting and have to stop often to catch my breath.

No you are not alone..I find that whenever I am physically sick my mental illnesses become more pronounced. It's like my body can't just let well enough alone and let me just be sick in one part of my body it has to all go haywire.

I know when I get a sinus infection it is really bad because one of OCD things is kleenex's. I have to get them folded just right before I can blow my nose and it can take forever sometimes before I can blow my nose. Stupid huh?

Hi gimmeice,

How are you? (Besides being sick!)

Actually, there are studies that have linked the strep virus to onset of OCD. If I can find any articles on it I will send you a link. I have mild ocd symptoms with intrusive thoughts and when my son exhibited symptoms I took him to a doctor who told me about the studies. Go figure.

So, what this tells me is take good care of yourself and get antibiotics if you need them. I hope you feel better.

JMO but I would imagine that when we are physically unwell we arent as mentally prepared to challenge our anxieties, sort of like we are already exhausted with fighting the illness w/out having to be alert for obsessions and challenge our anxieties/compulsions.
I also find that when I'm rly stressed out, I'm more prone to colds. Just more evidence IMO that our mind and bodies are inextricably linked.

Feel better soon

(((((((Gimmeice))))))))),
How strange, I'm dealing with the same type of thing. I've had bronchitis/sinusitis for about a month now, it is slowly fading. During this time, though, I actually had an episode of paranoia along with my OCD worsening. The paranoia (not delusional) basically was just that people were purposefully doing things to annoy me, which made me massively irritable.

I don't know about you, but I was given a pack of steroids for my lungs, and I wonder if that didn't cause my episode. I hope you are feeling better!

Yeah I was given some steroids too. Thankfully I am feeling much better now. I hated the steroids they seemed to have a lot of side effects including a bit of paranoia and irritability.

((((Gimmeice)))),
Yeah, my doctor prescribed me another round of steroids because my ears are irritated/have fluid in them. I haven't filled the prescription because I went through such a horrible bout of paranoia along with massive irritability that I don't think it's worth it. I'm not 100% positive that it was the steroids, because I've went through phases like that before, but I don't remember them being so fierce. I just want to feel better.

I'm glad that you are feeling better! Take care.

gimmeice, so sorry you got sick...since u mentioned you're on new ocd meds i'd give the pdoc a call to see what he says. if u hadn't mentioned that i'd probab have replied that my bpd acts up sometimes when i'm ill. don't have ocd, but i think anything regarding our health gets amplified when we have a mental condition too. but i'd give the pdoc a call too just to be sure.
hope you're feeling better real soon!!!
