Does anyone else find it difficult to listen to music when your severely depressed, or perhaps in some other "mood"? I ask this because I've been in a severe bp cycle the last several days and I just canNOT listen to music, I'm in emotional overload as it is and music brings it all to a level that is more than I can handle. I'm just curious as to others thoughts about this. TgrsPurr.

I'm the opposite, I guess.
Music is one of the things which helps me cope when the depression gets bad.

I agree with IG....music is what keeps me holding on.....going to sleep at night, listening to J.J. Cale, Enya, etc. helps me tremendously. BUT, I can't read a book when I'm in a deep funk. I can't concentrate past the title.

Enya I can definately understand listening to, especially going to sleep at night. I've done that before, but when I'm in a such a severe cycle...can't handle any of it??? TgrsPurr

I like music from back in the day, as they say.
When I'm more depressed, I like to listen to songs from bands such as Pink Floyd, Yes, and Genesis. One song which really captures the mood for me is "Bridge of Sighs" by Robin Trower. When I'm in more of a relative positive mood, I like Aerosmith, Kansas, The Who. Who Are You is one of my favorite LPs. I couldn't live with out music.

Tgrs, I am the same way sometimes and the exact opposite others. I can't figure out how or why it's not an exact thing. Sometimes when I'm cycling I can listen and it helps... others it makes the tilt-o-whirl worse. Maybe it has something to do with whether a trigger was involved or if it's just a natural bp cycle.

Yeah, yeah Ryan. I know exactly what you mean. Some cycles music helps, it's even therapeutic. But times like these when it's soooo extreme, I find it to be detrimental to my emotional state. LOL on the "tilt-a-whirl", couldn't have said it better! TgrsPurr.

....i've got a song and rythm for every kind of mood i can think of...I love it when i'm feeling alot of some emotion and i can turn on some music to make that feeling elevate untill it just about explodes. I love the feeling of being on the edge about to burst it's like a high that makes you feel so much, somethimes good sometimes bad...but all the same wonderful.

Though it doesn't happen often, I love it when I'm listening to the radio and they happen to play one of those old obscure songs which never gets any airplay, one that I havent heard since around the time it was popular. That can put me in an instant good mood!
With all the possible songs to choose from, I'll never figure out why the classic rock and oldies stations will keep playing the same songs over and over again.

Oh most definitely, and I'm a musician ferkrisakes! But look at what this illustrates about the physiology of the disorder. If you watched a picture of your normal brain listening to music, it would light up rhythmically and altogether differently in a deep cycle. As far as your brain is concerned, it's like listening to an intermittent broadcast; only so many synapses occurring where many more are needed. So now frustration enters, "why can't I enjoy this?" It's a good thing to look at when we are all pissy with ourselves about why can't I just do this or just do that, I mean, you can't even hear music and you expect to be able to work? So your observation about music I think really points to a deeper understanding of the organic aspect of this thing.

This happens to me, I get enough silence during the early part of the day, so I guess while driving, I need to listen to music or talk shows regardless of what moods I may be going through (I'm Bp-II) silence though is my choice when I am frazzled. The types of music I choose, varies, I like almost all types, and have noticed the relation of mood(s) and what I choose to listen to. . . it's great that there is so many kinds of music.
It hasn't happened lately, but I use to zone out if there was too much talking going on around me, almost as if I didn't understand what the person or people were saying, that is so strange, perhaps it is due to having too much on one's mind. All and all, I think what you have mentioned, must happen to everyone, one time or another in their life. My family is surprised that I haven't been playing any CD's lately. . . so am I. Take care, DE Oops! I meant to "click" my reply to the original poster, oh well. . . it happens ![]() ![]()

Amongst all my CD's, old vinyls, are many of their "albums"
I was a huge fan of theirs in the 70's, went out and got cd's to replace my old albums. From classic, rock, folk and world music, I'll need a storage room if I collect all that I'd like to, already my cabinet has shelves of categories, like a music shop, ha!ha! Take care, DE PS One of my favourites of the Moodys, was from the "Children's children" album, "Watching and Waiting"

Yes, that is definately my favorite of all, my dad had liked it so much too, that he gave me money and took me to Sam Goody's (was a popular music store back then) and we went in and bought it. . . probably my most fondest memory, was my very first Moody's album.
Dad passed away in 2002, and everytime that songs come on the radio (not often these days) I think of that special day at Sam Goody's ![]() Have a good day !! DE

Yes it's really hard for me to listen to music when I am depressed especially songs with words. It seems like it just sets off too many emotions and I am overloaded. I listen to Baroque music and find it healing when I am in a stressed out or depressed mood. I read that its rhythms actually are therapeutic for the brain and I know it seems to stabilize me.

OMG,
I had no idea anyone else did that! I thought I was the only one. Thank you so very much for posting this. This is the first time in almost 3 weeks I've been able to turn on music. It was just too much for an overloaded brain. Thank you, thank you again. January

Ah... The Moody Blues. My first concert. I have every album they've put out. I absolutely agree that they have an amazing ability to calm my nerves... when I'm able to listen to music. My favorite song is a toss up. It's either For My Lady or Isn't Life Strange.

Wow! Robin Trower, takes me back to the 70's, I had 8-track for the car, ha!ha! I wonder how many here, even remember 8-tracks, ha!ha! Over the years, and having those 8's been stolen on one of the many break ins/stolen, I can't remember if that was one of them, but I did have one of those, Robin Trowers.
Memory, lost. . . days gone by, memory lost ![]() Right now, I'm on my I-pod, I got for my BD in Jan, and listening to The Moody's, my son retrieved my cd's I bought to replace my albums, and stolen tapes, and had them put on my BD gift, I-pod (new tech to me, but getting use to it) well, a few old songs from them brought me back, a "few" years, and if anyone here can print on this thread the lyrics to : "You can never go home", "My Song", and "Melancholy Man", I would appreciate it (I'm not computer literate) cause then that poetry can convey (sp?) a portion of who I am, or what I feel. Though old, The Moody's poetry can relate to many of us, where we have been, where we are, and possibly where we are going. But those songs, mentioned, at the present, explain a teeny portion of "me" and not all of what y'all have yet learned about me. Well, anyone here that can display the lyrics of the songs I just mentioned, would be deeply appreciated. . . helping me to unlock (in words) some of my feelings. If you do, thanks in advance. I really would like many to know me, and it can be partially possible through lyrics, poetry, beauty of music. . . young or even old. Oh yes, another is "Tuesday Afternoon". . . I was born on a Tuesday, . . . dad died on a Tuesday ![]() Goodnite, y'all terrific people ![]() I think I got the hang of "copy/paste" ? Here goes: My Song by The Moody Blues I'm going to sing my song And sing it all day long A song that never ends How can i tell you, all the things inside my head. The change in these past years Has made me see our world In many different ways How can i tell you, love can change our destiny. Love can change the world Love can change your life Do what makes you happy Do what you know is right And love with all your might Before it's too late Where did I find all these words? Something inside of me is burning There's life in other worlds Maybe they'll come to earth Helping man to find a way One day I hope we'll be in perfect harmony A planet with one mind Then I could tell you All the things inside my head I'm going to sing my song And sing it all day long A song that never ends How can I tell you, all the things inside my head. I'm going to sing my song A song that never ends Okay, gang it's from the 70's but still has good meaning,eh? Now, if I could only get this (below) empty space out of here, I tried the backspace key but it is only backspacing one character at a time. Well, forgive this large blank space, ha!ha! Represents my brain at the moment, ha!ha!
