would it be fun to talk about music and the feelings it gives?

ME: Boston "More Than a Feeling" .. i feel like im drifting in space into timelessness... new dawn, new day... ties the old "... i hear that old song..." with the new "... close my eyes and it takes me away..."

ME: "Gypsys, Tramps, and Thieves" (artist unknown) ... i feel like im in a gypsy caravan, with the medicine show and spells and concoctions all around...

LAST: Van Morrison "New Day" ... the world has just begun...

so i hope everyone will have fun with this... Music?

Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves is Cher?

Neat Country site: http://www.storybehindthesong.net/

One of my favorite songs of all is "Moonglow," the theme from the show "Picnic". I don't care about the words, just the swing of the music. It makes me feel like dancing (I don't dance :-) and, specifically, dancing with my father. It just feels warm, loving and supportive to me. Reminds me a tiny bit of "Meet Joe Black".

Sarah Brightman's version of Nessun Dorma never fails to transport me to utopia ............ mind you - most of her music does that!!

Everybody's Fool by Evanesence also touches me deeply. Depending on my mood, listening to it leaves me feeling intensely depressed or rather energized. (Thus, I have learnt not to listen to it when down ....)

Occasionaly, I listen to Gregorian chants - very soothing!

REO Speedwagon's "I can't fight this feeling any longer" always brings back such nostalgia of sad school days. But it doesn't make me feel sad now.

Between feelings and emotions ......... Sarah brings out intense feeling and Evanesence brings out intense emotion

I love this sad words/music combo:

WHISTLING AWAY THE DARK
From "Darling Lili"
(Johnny Mercer / Henry Mancini)

Often I think this sad old world is whistling in the dark.
Just like a child, who, late from school walks bravely home through the park.
To keep their spirits soaring and keep the night at bay.
Neither quite knowing which way they are going, they sing the shadows away,
Often I think my poor old heart has given up for good and then I see a brand new face, I glimpse some new neighborhood.
So walk me back home, my darling, tell me dreams really come true.
Whistling whistling here in the dark with you.
Often I think my poor old heart has given up for good and then I see a brand new face, I glimpse some new neighborhood.
So walk me back home, my darling, tell me dreams really come true.
Whistling whistling here in the dark with you.

That and "Superwoman" by Alicia Keys which is on her most recent album.

Anything but country (bleh)!

Was just listening to Live-The Distance To Here, great cd.

Also some Marilyn Manson can get me moving, puts me in a good mood believe it or not!

Step one you say we need to talk
He walks you say sit down it's just a talk
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through
Some sort of window to your right
As he goes left and you stay right
Between the lines of fear and blame
You begin to wonder why you came

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Let him know that you know best
Cause after all you do know best
Try to slip past his defense
Without granting innocence
Lay down a list of what is wrong
The things you've told him all along
And pray to God he hears you
And pray to God he hears you

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

As he begins to raise his voice
You lower yours and grant him one last choice
Drive until you lose the road
Or break with the ones you've followed
He will do one of two things
He will admit to everything
Or he'll say he's just not the same
And you'll begin to wonder why you came

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

ive heard the theory, uncertain about it myself, that music can please, as well as sustain emotion...

ive heard it put forward that listeners of "classical" (Mozart, Bach, Hayden... etc) are usually upper class, educated, social "pillars" ...

that listeners of rock and roll are usually made up of working class...

i wonder, by listening to the music and as our senses are stroked, if there is any truth to those theories...

the drumbeat in music is said to alter heartbeat.. guitar and other instruments excite the senses... a cacophony of sensations...

and what about the subliminal? like commercials, do we subliminally act out on our musical fantasies in the course of everyday life...

often, i find a melody stuck in my mind... no apparant reason, but is there a reason? is it a calming or empowering tune?

often, i find myself in a conflict or difficult situation... a songs words will provide some insight into understanding and provide compulsion for action...

i wonder... are musicians often aware of the powerful effects the music will have?

are we being controlled by our own music choices? someone in the thread mentioned listening to the same song and the feelings of sadness it brings... i have experienced the same myself..

can we get happier just by changing the song?

please continue provinding your thoughts... thank you everyone...

Nowhere, isn't what you're thinking about what "music therapy" seeks to work with?

Well, I think we're use to hearing words and seeing "pictures"? So, reading causes emotions because our eyes see pictures in the words and listening to music, likewise influences our "thinking"?

sounds very reasonable Perna.. to what extent are we aware of those influences though?

at times ive taken long breaks from any music whatever.. if anyone is familiar with the the story of Satan being the Angel of Music, please share.. i only understand, in the Bible, as ive been told, that Satan has control of music...

God allowed Satan to retain this power even though Satan was cast out from Heaven because God knew that even music was less powerful than Gods own Strength.. God felt no concern that Satans use of music would detain any followers of the true path...

(cant i ever have a discusssion without bringing God in somehow??) {apparantly not he answered himself}

yes, imagery Perna.. sometimes, i have full blown fantasy images, and others, simply flashing lights, like fireworks, when listening to music...

Paul in Eph. 2:2 :

"In which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience."

See also 1John 4:4, 1Pet. 5:8-9, etc. The [underlined] phrase above indicates that Satan influences what we hear from the air -- What is broadcast over the radio, tv and movies, whether spoken, sung. or suggested.

I listen to Mes Aieux no matter what mood I'm in, they combine the folk sound of traditional Québecois music with modern sounds: it's a style that only suits me when sung in French. Listening to all of their songs reminds me of being way up north and playing outdoor hockey.

Chanson a Boire would be my favourite song, singing about the history, I could listen to that all day (and I do).

Plus Rien by Les Cowboys Fringants I listen to whenever I'm sad, great lyrics.

Then I listen to Montréal -40 by Malajube when I'm in a good mood, it has a good catchy tune and makes me happy.

you are an angel Perna (dont mean that in a bad way) ... i had only discussed this idea once with a knowledgeable friend... now i have more to base it on...

thank you..

when i get home from work muffy, i'll listen to the song again.. ive heard it many times but not the video and it is appreciated that the words were provded earlier in the thread.. would you like to have a discussion on this particular song? maybe, if you want, you can go first... just saying what the first few lines (or the whole song) means to you, but try and break it down line by line, ok? this is interesting...

thank you both...

I'm sorry Perna but this thread is being taken over by religious points of view. Cant we just take music for what it is and enjoy it??? sorry, just my opinion......quotes from the bible maybe should be kept to the spirituality forum??
