greg, when you open it, go to file/top left. on the drop down menu is password. it's near the bottom of the menu...you can set your password there.
I use one because my computer is used by others, and I've no desire for them to have access to it. It helps me be more honest since I don't have it in the back of my mind that I have to be "delicate" in case they do not honor my privacy.
