I have to agree this is a step in the wrong direction. Those of us who have been in psychiatric hospitals often feel we have to keep that fact quiet because of the stigma attached to such a stay. This "shop" reinforces the stereotype that all people with mental illness are "crazy", "violent", must be subdued, discriminated against, kept away from others. I cannot imagine taking my children to an establishment that propogates such stereotypes.

Maybe they will ask each customer if they want their donuts with or without a barf bag.

What do you think ?

I really like catrr8 's comment ..

I was in tears I was laughing so hard at such entrepreneuric frivolity.

What sane person would suit up each day and feel proud to be working in a Saturday night live flash in the pan.

Hey maybe nows the time to make and print out My bumper sticker idea .

Maybe I can market It to Phyco Donuts . They can print it out as warning label on thier barf bags.

"Don't dunk and drive..."

This would be supported only by the ignorant and those who do not have a mental illness of dissabeling proportions and have sufferd much . And ignorance breeds more unfortunately.

Hmmm... LOL It doesn't offend me because I've learned to not care what other people think of me. If I can't laugh at myself, then what can I laugh at, but...

I can understand how others might feel.

The donut with the face of "a guy who's seen better days" might not be too appatizing, though.

Oh...Orange!!

What are we going to do with the world these days?

So I read the article, and was slightly offended. I felt attacked, but more as a group, not so much as a person! I love getting in to decent debates about stuff like this from time to time and I just couldn't help but to leave a comment. I copied it, so I will post it below. I do want to say that what I wrote may offend some readers, due to language, but I did not mean any disrespect towards any one person or group of people, and the fact that it is/would be offensive is the entire point, so my apologies if this offends anyone!!

Here it is....

My Response to article:
Okay...I understand that the intentions were good. Yet there are two sides to every coin!!

I am a person that suffers with moderate to severe mental illness. I am NOT psycho!! I have casually joked with my friends before about being crazy, you know "Oh...ha ha, she's just nuts" type of thing, but if they take it a bit to far, I let them know that it hurts my feelings and ask them to scale their comments back.

All this being said, If you decided to sell only chocolate doughnuts, or plain donuts with chocolate frosting on them , decorated your shop like it was a slave camp and called your store N*gger Donuts, this would not be acceptable for the obvious reasons. If you sold flamboyantly designed donuts shaped like male/female body parts, decorated your store flamboyantly and called your store Flaming Fagg*t Donuts, this would not be acceptable either. If you chose to isolate the developementaly delayed population and make your shop look like a nursing home and served donuts that looked like a face of someone with down syndrome with drool running down their chin and called your store Ret*rd Donuts, society would most likely see you shut down!!

So, why then is it okay to isolate and target another group of people, the mentally ill, just because society hasn't yet gotten over the fear and stigma of mental illness and further assist in the oppression and discrimination of the mentally ill.

I understand casual joking around, bantar, and even some comic relief, but this just isn't funny or appropriate.

Thank you for hearing me!!

I just posted there too. Kip is co-owner.

Kip said "We're just trying to create a fun atmosphere where families can get a funky donut and get a little chuckle."

Kip,
My sister-in-law, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, recently committed suicide and left behind two small children.

I don't think her kids would get a chuckle out of your "fun atmosphere."

Now or in the future.

What other illnesses will you spoof? A funky Cancer-donut shop? There are lots of cancers to choose from for sure. Most everyone I know has lost someone to that serious disease, so just think of the business you'll do.

I agree with what was originally posted (by the person who wrote the article, perhaps??)

Quote:
Comment Below: I usually try and remain objective and let you, the Readers, do the commentary, but I find this absolutely appalling. We still have miles to go in changing attitudes in this country. There is nothing "fun" or "lighthearted" about straitjackets and institutions, and someone who "looks like he's had better days" decorating the Massive Brain Trauma is a fantastic way to reinforce negative stereotyping. Am I overreacting? How can we take these (admittedly unintended) offenses and make them "teachable moments?"

wow I can't believe that! just GRRRR

I don't see how people can find mental illness and such humorous? I don't find it worth a slight chuckle that I am a prisoner of my own mind day in and day out.

I wish people like that could spend one day in my shoes, one day, and know what it's like to live in chaos.

I can't even read all the comments because some of those people back that appalling place, I left my two cents there, I hope the owner realizes what he is doing, and how it hurts us with mental illness, to be made a joke of isn't fun....

Are you serious? There is a sense of humour and then there is just plain stupidity and codescension. I am sure that any mentally ill person that has spent time in a psych ward would be "happy" to let their children dress in a straight jacket. Maybe these people need to spend some time in one in a real life situation and see how "light hearted it is".

Stupid, stupid people........

I'll have to remain neutral on this issue. Anybody who knows me here is well aware of the many many psych hospitalizations I've had.

For those who are angry with the shop, I found this petition. Might be helpful..

The d@mned thing sounds fracking stupid.

Malady has had those "you have to laugh or else you'd start screaming and never stop" moments -- and laughed at itself, and made fun of its own afflictions as a result -- but this? This would NOT even REMOTELY be in the same category.

Tacky and tasteless. Why not do the liposuction clinic theme next? That at least would be fitting ...

How sad. I predict, however, that it won't work as a business, at least not without big changes. Sure people might think it's funny for a short time, but that will wear off and the $2 a donut price won't be worth it. They aren't even making but 10 dozen a day. That won't pay the bills. Let's try and check back on them in 6 months and see to what theme they moved?

I think it's horrible. I know they don't give a damn what anyone else thinks, but I will still voice my anger. I agree they have free speech to do pretty much whatever theme they want, but that doesn't mean I have to agree with it. It makes me sad that some people on there thought it was okay. Why not create a donut shop with a theme of the swine flu or avian flu? Those are hysterical. Flesh-eating bacteria? What a hoot! Alopecia? Now we're having laughs! I mean, really. They should be locked up in a mental hospital and see how funny it is.

i think they should do a 180 degree turn around with a theme and name change to support people with mental illness...all profits given to mental health advocates.

I've sent the link for the story on these to Bill O'Reilly at Fox News... and I labeled them "certifiable" Pinheads!!!! Maybe it will receive some national attention now for inconsiderate acts. I do find this appalling, and shameful in that they are teaching children to make fun of mental unwellness.

"I'm Free" lyrics from a song by Jon Secada

Quote:
Sometimes I'm blinded by my feelings
And I can't see beyond my troubled mind
Afraid of what I'll find, the story of our lives
But there's tomorrow

'Cause I'm free, Im free
And things are only as important as I want them to be
We'll have a breath of sunshine
When the rain goes away I pray, I pray, yeah
C'mon, people! It's only 120 donuts a day in ONE CITY! In the big picture of things, what's it going to matter? Who's life is it going to change in a bad way? Yours, maybe, but only if you let it! Let it go! It doesn't reflect on YOU, it reflects on THEM!

[/quote]

you never know whos life it might change since this is a place that encorages "children" to make fun of those who are psycho . and most children can't begin to grasp what thats all about.

Quote:
Sometimes I'm blinded by my feelings
And I can't see beyond my troubled mind

Afraid of what I'll find,

'Cause I'm free, Im free
And things are only as important as I want them to be

right , Im some what free of the chains that have bound me . but not quite. and they began in childhood and center around this very kind of activity thats happening at this donut shop.

so i can sit back and do nothing . or i can voice my concerns .

This just was not well thought out with much sensitivity or care

Some continue in thier blind ingnorance to say things like i hope a chain is opened across the country and im going to go buy dozens of these donuts because I hate people who are PC,

so they are STILL missing the picture . its not about polital correctness really . its about saving a few lives. and hearts and minds as to where they are in the process of discovering thier mental illness or struggle with recovering or just living day to day with it.

And yes the donut shop is small potatoes in comparison to other terrorist activities .

but terrorizing under the guise of poking fun and selling a donut to make a buck it is. a good start for some to speack out about.

and to think some are making a circus act of NAMI protesters is just how far people will go to protect thier stand.

you see this in the adult entertainment industry and thats even sicker. when people claim its helping others .despite the truth is its harmful.toward women DENILE is tricky. .

Its a stand off about pride . most decent people would let go of thier pride give things a heart felt look admidt they are hurting others care about it and make some simple changes .

the organizations are loking for funding to help the owners make changes . and they STILL won't budge all in the name of the right to free speech .

Its just sad . And as long as they continue to have thier supporters they may never take a good look at what they are doing ,

Pachy,

no hole in them donuts , sorry They nixed the bloodshot eye ball idea and went for the xed out eyes instead Who knows they may find this and re think thier designs for ya!
