Hi everyone!

First of all, I hav'nt wriiten in awhile because I've been recovering from hand surgery. I just want to thank all of you for wishing me well and for your prayers!:-). I've been taking percoset for the pain and tommorow I will be going in for a post-op recheck.

On another note, my old mercury thermometer broke the other day and I ended up being forced to purchase a digital one because 7 states outlaw them now and they are difficult to find anymore. I must say that I am not at all happy with this "high-tech" one because the readings are always much lower than they were on the mercury one. It also takes my temp in about 10 seconds which might help explain WHY the reading is so low - it does'nt take my temp long enough!. How accurate are these things anyway and do you need to add or subtract 10 degrees to get your reading or something (it's oral)?

Thank's again and I hope everyone had a HAPPY EASTER!

they are generally very accurate and they are faster because of developing technology. they were first put into use in hospitals and clinics because a nurse doesn't have extra minutes to stand there and wait on a mercury thermometer.....you probably won't find a mercury thermometer in a healthcare setting now. pat p.s. i'd question the accuracy of the mercury thermometer..not the digital.

Why such a low reading each time then?. I'm talking about a difference of up to .10 degrees or more vs the reading I usually got (98.2F - 99.2F) on the mercury one. I'm using it correctly too. Thank's for the reply. Maybe I'm missing somthing here. Do I need to "set" it or acclimate it first?

UPDATE: I'm getting 97.2, 96.8, etc. That just can't be right.

I too have noticed that my digital one has not been accurate. Maybe it is a glitch in a few of them. I had the flu once and took my temp and it was normal 98.6. About two hours later I went to the doctor and they took it with the ear one... and I had a temp of 102. I just dont trust the one that I have anymore.
I am with you on this one.

greygoose, i'm glad you're doing well.

with the digital thermometers, i leave them in even after the "beep" until it quits rising. if you'll notice when you leave it in, it will continue to rise after the beep. every one of mine has anyhow. i've found that to be quite accurate with the mercury ones...doing it that way.

let me know?

My sister broke the Mecury one by biting on it! My mom just about had a cow, at the time I didn't know what the big deal was but now I understand!
