Hi folks,

Recently it's come to our attention that sometimes people are PM'ing one another and asking each other to not reply to a specific post they've made. (Because people are complaining to a member of the moderation team about these requests.)

This forum software has a feature called "Ignore." To ignore a fellow member (and therefore not see any of their posts or replies), simply click on the member's name you'd like to ignore and choose "Ignore this user" option.

It is against community guidelines and unsupportive to PM someone to tell them to specifically not reply to some thread. So please do not that any more. Put the person on ignore and leave it be. That's why the feature is there.

If someone PMs you with such a request from now on, please PM me personally and I'll make sure the other member understands that is not appropriate. Thanks.

DocJohn

Hoping I'll never have to use that feature. Glad it's there, though, just in case. It's a smart thing to use, and could potentially save alot of grief for those who use it.

DAYZEE9 ,
Respectfully I think you should have PM'd Doc about that question, instead of bringing it to the forum

Fury, I read one day, but I don't remember who said it, that even though you can put someone on ignore, if they reply to the thread you still see their avatar, and even that can be triggering for some people.

that might be the case, wi. but if someone feels the deep need to emotionally protect themself from a member, they can go into setting and choose to not view avatars. that's an option for that situation? i've never done that, but i've read that it's available.

love,

kd

Hence the reason people should not PM others and say, "Don't even think about replying to XYZ post in the ABC forum." It is inappropriate and against community guidelines to send a PM like that (because it is unsupportive).

If you don't want Member ABC to reply to a post, you can't stop them because we don't have such a mechanism here (and it would be a silly mechanism to begin with). You can, however, ignore members you don't want to read. That's the way to accomplish the same thing with little of the hurt feelings the other way causes.

sure, doc. I'll keep that in mind, but for some thought....If someone didn't want someone else to reply to a post, and they told that person about it, wouldn't that person see it to find out why and become confused and offended? I believe this is why you have the "ignore user", but I think that to prevent this one from replying, shouldn't they just not tell them about the post? Wouldn't that keep them from even thinking about offense?

Sorry, my Writing teacher said I'm a deep, logical thinker....I ask unanswerable questions alot.

I've actually thought the same thing, Fury. If someone asked me not to respond to a thread, I would go and read it even if otherwise I wouldn't have, just out of curiosity. I probably wouldn't respond to it, but I would be really hurt having been asked that. On ignoring others and asking others to not reply to you... On ignoring others and asking others to not reply to you... On ignoring others and asking others to not reply to you... I'd much rather be put on ignore.

DocJohn,
If we're having trouble with parts can we put ourselves on 'ignore'? Would that work?
thank you,
kerria

lol Kerria! On ignoring others and asking others to not reply to you...

Fury/SC -- I think that's exactly DocJohn's point.

Honestly, if someone PMed me and told me not to reply to one of their threads, I would just think they were a drama queen. I don't think I'd make a big stink about it or feel particularly hurt. Would make me think that they are someone I probably don't see eye-to-eye with anyway, so saves me the trouble of trying to help where help isn't wanted.

Can anyone else see it that way?

Lmo-
i see it that way and saw it that way - but i guess my post about it was too "metaphorical" or something because (suprise) nobody seemed to get what i said and did not reply ( although i put some effort into the american indian w/mirrors analogy )
Oh well- guess i should stick to poetry if my lisence isnt revoked ( oops did word play again) sorry i dont speak like regular people.. . .

I'm GLAD you don't speak like regular people, KA! Your writing totally intrigues me, especially your poetry. And I normally hate poetry. I think that my brain is just a little too small to get *everything* that you write, but you're clearly genius.

LMo, Very good point! I like your take on this. Think I'll adopt it! On ignoring others and asking others to not reply to you... Altho, I've not yet been asked not to reply to a thread.

Kathyanita, I am curious which post you are referring to. I don't think I saw it. I agree with LMo that you should be you. Sometimes (a lot of the time) your insights go over my head, but I like how you write On ignoring others and asking others to not reply to you...

Actually, i was serious about the question to put ourselves on ingore- why i can't post is that we can't stand to see parts' writing.

..................probably then what's the point. no one can support us if they don't know who we are.

Why it's so hard to do anything.

oh, Kerria -- I'm sorry.

No, I don't think you can do that. However, you could see if you could get your parts to create separate login ids and then ignore THEM. And maybe set your logon so that it does not store your password, so that they can't log on as you.

It's true - when they log on as you, then we don't necessarily know it right away.

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
