This time of year is very difficult for me as I lost my uncle, aunt and Mom within 3 years. My family pretty much fell apart. This year....I decided it was time to make new traditions, new memories. So I hosted Thanksgiving at my house.

Well....I took Tues, Weds and Thurs off from work to detail the house and get to cooking! Dug up all the old recipies that we grew up on and had it all planned.

Tuesday, I was power cleaning. Up and down on a chair washing my walls (H was finishing up the bathroom remodel). Well....that night my knee swelled to the size of a ripe cantelope and I was writhing in pain.

H took me to the ER at 4:00 Wed am and they said that I had a lot of fluid on my knee. They put me in a knee immobilizer and crutches (and pain meds). Told me that if I expected to go back to work on Monday, I needed to just stay off my feet and keep my leg propped up.

Thankfully my husband and daughter picked up the slack and we had a nice dinner (10 people over). Although it was not possible for me to stay off my leg...we were running late and I just couldn't sit down.

Today....OMG I am sooo paying for it...and I am very frustrated! H had to go back to work today and he will be gone tonight and tommorow, he made me promise that I would stay off my feet. My sweet daughter has called me 5 times today to see if I need anything, but there is something wrong with me...I have always been the caregiver...for everyone...and I am not enjoying this helplessness at all!!

Why do I feel guilty?????

oh hon! I am so sorry you are in such pain. please try not to feel guilty. I did that too and still do at times. I can't do all the cooking anymore and dang it stinks. take it easy! you need to rest and let others take care of you for a change. caregivers feel this way!

Thank you so much Bebop! I am just so dissapointed that it didn't turn out like I imagined. Also frustrated that even though I kept off of it all day...it still hurts and is still swollen..

Thanksgiving....well..everyone seemed to enjoy it. I am grateful that my husband and daughter were there to pick up the slack. I guess I am just beating my self up.....

Susan!!
No guilt allowed...besides FedEx still has your bat.

I'm sorry your plans didn't go as well as you wanted/needed them to go...
but
You took the absolutely wonderful step of making new traditions--next year just leave off the knee problems, ok?

Re your knee...I hate that you are still in pain. Please do everything you are supposed to do, and nothing you are not supposed to do, ok?

Bebop is right about caregivers...we have a well developed sense of responsibility and doing for others. It's foreign to us to have to put ourselves first...
and if our plans don't work out the way we wanted, we almost always feel we are to blame and not the circumstances.
I don't think you make special plans for this happen, right?

In Peace

Sorry to hear about your knee. It's best that you take care of yourself, then you can resume taking care of others. Everyone needs a break form the norm. Enjoy this time. You don't have to feel guilty at all. I hope you have a speedy recovery. Big hugs from over here.
Thanks for this!

Susan ~ washing walls? No wander you injured yourself. Years ago, I used to do the same thing, and now that I can't, guilt fills me most of the time. I know it is probably inappropriate, and you must tell yourself the same thing. You made a wonderful effort, and the dinner happened and was very nice. Now you DESERVE some caretaking. Really and truly you do. Try to accept it. It is not a gift but something earned. You did good, Girl, really good. With admiration ~ billieJ

Just remember, in order to care for others-you have to care for yourself first.

Back to work today....OMG..IT HURTS, IT HURTS, IT HURTS!!!! OUCH!!! This is worse than childbirth!!!

Whew....well, I just needed to get that out. Really, I have a pretty high tolerance for pain, but this just feels like someone hit me in knee with a baseball bat.

BIG mistake not wearing my ugly knee brace to work today.....and driving..well, that was just horrible (I have a stick shift). I really thought that since I spent so much time this week wearing the brace, icing the knee, staying off of it that I would be OK at work today. Home for about 2 hours now and the percocet is not touching it.

Soooo sorry to whine.....hopefully the ice pack and knee brace (I am sleeping with both tonight) will make it better tomorrow.

I feel pathetic and helpless.....OK I'm done now.....

Thank you all so much for listening to me! I don't feel comfortable showing my whimpy side to my family..

Much love,
Susan

Oh Daggy!!! I will NEVER clean my walls again!!! I am now of the opinion that cobwebs and a little dirt simply add character to a house!!

Thanks for listening to me whine! Oh and did I mention....OUCH! OUCH!! LOL!!!
