I don't know about anyone else, but I for one am relieved when someone comes in and posts something lighthearted to diffuse tension. Haven't we all heard the saying "laughter is the best medicine." ?

And yet I see more than a few people getting bent out of shape over this. When people get upset about something, we're told to drop it. When we try to drop it and steer the subject matter away from something upsetting, we're told to be serious.

Talk about crazymaking. Conflicting messages.

I think the confusion comes in cause quite a few of us have a hard time confronting conflict. The whole fight or flight thing and using humor is(for me anyway) the easiest way to flight. So in therapy we learn that fleeing isnt always the best way to handle things and the confusion comes when it seems well encouraged in the world. No one likes the squeeky wheel yet, some of us anyway, internalize the things we let fester inside. So the choice seems to be hate ourselves and keep quiet or be hated and speak up. Whats the right answer? Seems both have definate disadvantages to me. Like i said, confusion Conflicting messages.

Shay, I'm referring to when people start a thread to help lighten the mood, and then someone has to deliberately jump in and shake their non-moderator finger at everyone for daring to have a sense of humor. I'm not saying run from conflict that needs resolution. I'm saying when you've beaten a dead horse into hamburger puree, drop it already.

Why don't we just forget why we beat that dead horse so badly and go back to the way we used to do things. We're worrying too much about mentioning God, making a funny and hijacking threads. MOST of us never worried about it before! I, for one, refuse to worry about these things because I KNOW that I follow the rules when I'm thoughtful, period.

I agree that laughter is the best medicine.
I agree that we need to abandon "the war."
We need to learn to let things go when they are over.
We need to stop being so sensitive when a mod or Doc John hasn't called us on anything.

Like I still tell my grown kids "WHEN IN DOUBT, DON'T!" If you have doubts as to whether a post is appropriate, don't post it without asking a mod if it's okay. From what I've seen in the last few days, it REALLY has to be over the top for anyone to get called on anything. Conflicting messages.

I agree. I know I, for one, have doubted myself because of all of this, even thought I KNOW I follow the guidelines and am repsectful. I've gotten myself all caught up in something I'm not guilty of, or that doesn't even really affect me, because I usually ignore all the stuff that bothers me anyway (or laugh about it). Consider the war over in my head.
