I went to see my therapist yesterday, today my cpn (community psychiatric nurse)came to see me for 1.5 hours.....I seriously am exhausted.....My T things cbt, which is what my nurse is doing, conflicts with the deep trauma therapy I am going through. In a nice way I put this to my cpn today and told her that I agree with everything she is trying to do, get me motivated, excercise, turn negative thoughts to positive etc, I know all this, but it's hard to put into practice when you're feeling particularly low. I had about 2 hours sleep last night so I am going for a nap........my therapist would recommend it, my cpn would recommend going for a walk with the dog.....I have trouble going out on my own anyway, wouldn't this just make me more stressed?

Anyone having the same problems? coflicting advice.

Therapy will last at the least 3 years approx, I've had 11 sessions of cbt, last one next week. The relaxation methods have helped a bit, but everything else is just getting well 'by the book' and is not for everyone IMHO.

what do you think?

I don't understand cpn's.(or the nhs doctors I've seen) Do they speak a different language? conflicting help.....

How could they even think six to eleven sessions could do anything to help those of us dealing with childhood abuse issues (shrugs)

((((((((((((( jinny ))))))))))))))

I suggest you stick with your therapist and end or seriously limit seeing the others if you can...they do conflict. They do cause confusion.

It sounds like your nurse is providing therapy. I think it is really hard to see 2 therapists at once unless they are in frequent consultation with each other and perhaps one is providing a specialized service the other cannot (e.g. hypnotherapy, EMDR). I would stick with just one therapist right now, the one you feel is helping you most, especially if one of them has expressed that the other is working at cross purposes to him. That is not helpful to the client!

As for CBT, I did find when I was working with a CBT counselor that she tried to fit my treatment into some sort of CBT box and I had to be firm with her about what was and was not working. I was only able to sleep 2-3 hours each night and had been that way for a couple of years. She needed to hear loudly from me that the most important thing for me was sleep, not exercise or any of the other things on her CBT list. Once she got the message, she was able to focus on the sleep problem, and she helped me so much with that! But I really had to be assertive in getting her to listen.

I recommend listening to your body. And your soul. And doing what you need to heal. Only you know. Sometimes well meaning suggestions like "get exercise" just aren't the ticket at the moment. When you have more sleep or are feeling stronger, then you can add exercise. Hang in there!

If you're depressed, taking a walk is rarely harmful whereas taking a nap often can be.

Jinny,
I have a wonderful T that I have been seeing a little over 2 years. There have been ups and downs, unfortunately, I'm in a down. I think this is the real issue that we are dealing with now. It hurts like #$%%#@! I sometimes wonder if I'm going to make it through. Somehow, I know I will.

I think my answer to your question is TIME. I think you have to go through what you go through and there will be a point that things ease.

I hope you will soon reach that place soon (you and I both)

Hang in there.
