I found out today that after numerous false starts at school, I don't qualify for studentloans until I get to sophmore level. That means that I will have to go back to work, and with my disability (stroke at 19), I always hear that I'm "overqualified" or never hear back. All I qualify for now is grants... and not that many. I don't know what to do. I'm scared... I can't make it!

GG,

Why in the world can't you qualify for the loans? Sometimes you can work at your college. It's good experience and I used to do it. Maybe we can brainstorm.

Many hugs,

Jan

GoofyGirl,

I am so sorry this haapened. Please have faith that something will work out. Can you speak with someone at the school to see exactly what you could qualify for?

Hugs if wanted (((((((((((((((((GG))))))))))))))))))))

I already talked with financial aid... I qualify for grants only. There are no scholarships available for my program til sophmore status is achieved. I'll get approximately $1,000 in grants per term... tuition is $91/credit hour, and then there's books to buy... anywhere for $300-600 per term for a full load, depending upon availability of used textbooks. Typically, I use the excess to pay things in advance so that I can get by on my disability. I pay over half my SSDI payment for my place. Just when things are starting to look up, too. I just want to cry! I am so sick of this! When things start to get better and actually look favorable, the other shoe drops, whether I'm looking for it to or not!

i would contact other schools and ask them about financial aid. Some Iowa schools are looking hard for students. It may be that another school could provide more assistance then you could transfer when reaching sophmore status. It may mean a move which can be very difficult but it may be better than postponing your education.

i do not know your situation but is Voc rehab a posibility?

Or attending part time until the sophmore staus is reached?

Just some thoughts.

Take care and good luck.

Regardless, I will have to go back to work in the fall. I use the excess loan and grant money to defray expenses. I will have to pay child support through the nose, yet they will still not go after the ex! UGH! I'm going to freak out!

(((((((((Hey GG I don't know what I'm going to do! Need advice...)))))))))))))))))))))

When I initially went to the local vocational college for my LPN, I also did NOT qualify for Student Loans (Federal) b/c before I decided to go into the LPN; I took a couple of semesters of classes; which all were "false starts" like you.

BUT I don't know what I'm going to do! Need advice...I had my mental Dx & got hooked up w/ Dept. of Vocational Rehab...(DVR) For 3 years, they paid for ALL classes & all books......AND, when I went through the LPN program, they paid for all uniforms...everything. If you're on SSDI you would have an automatic "IN" w/ DVR....plus, if you're paying child support too......you SHOULD get bumped up on the waiting list (if there is one) Go make an appt. w/ the DVR counselor at your school, tell them EVERYTHING!!

It's really worth your time & trouble! And, I didn't have to work either when I was in the initial LPN program! I don't know what I'm going to do! Need advice...

And that's the bottom line from I don't know what I'm going to do! Need advice... I don't know what I'm going to do! Need advice... DAYZEE9
