You need to get professional help. It appears you may have biological and emotional problems. Have you family doctor refer you to a psychologist or psychiatrist for evaluation.
Good luck. |

If the thoughts are really disturbing and upsetting it might be the result of OCD. OCD generates the kinds of thoughts that you are talking about. EG, holding a baby and then a thought that is just awful comes along like throwing the baby on the ground, something that nobody that is rational would ever consider doing. The more you try to stop thinking about terrible though the more it returns. You should see a therapist and explain the thoughts, if it is OCD there are wonderful methods to treat this illness.

I disagree somewhat with the tenor of the replies so far. I think it depends on the severity of the thoughts, or how disturbing they are to you. Such thoughts are not completely uncommon, and I don't think they necessarily should be alarming. If you can observe them when they happen, just think about them, without being terribly afraid that you are going to take action, then you might just consider them as strange-but-sometimes-part-of-life.
Whatever.

Thinking about using a knife to slice is severe. Wondering about killing is severe.

You definitely want to talk to a professional about these thoughts to try an understand where they're coming from.
In the meantime, recognize that thoughts are just thoughts. Use mindfulness to watch them, hear what they have to say and let them go. These types of thoughts can be frightening and very disturbing. However, if you just let them go through you they will probably lessen. Getting upset, anxious and worried about them is like throwing fuel on a fire. Thoughts literally eat emotions for lunch, and grow bigger and bigger from the "nourishment." So to recap: For the long haul, seek help. In the meantime recognize your thoughts don't control you as long as you don't let them freak you out. Thoughts are like barking, snarling, slobbering dogs -- with no teeth. |

Welcome to PC. ![]() If your thoughts are troubling you (you did say they're annoying and you're a bit worried), then I'd seek the help of a counsellor/therapist, or some other mental health professional. Sometimes automatic thoughts can be alarming, but it doesn't mean you're a horrible person. Myself, I always imagine and think about the "worst case scenario" in different situations. You can train your brain a bit to change thought patterns (CBT) or perhaps medication would help (antidepressants for me stopped a lot of negative/worriesome thought patterns). None of us are professionals though that can really help, so please talk to your doctor. You deserve to be happy and healthy.

Hello Unspoken Words, You mention that you have had these type of thoughts more than once. If the type of thoughts you mean are thoughts of harming other people or yourself, then I believe that it would be very important for you to see a psychiatrist as soon as possible and share this information with him or her. I have been treated for psychiatric illness for over 35 years and have been through the psychiatric screening process many, many times and this particular area is one that the professionals are always concerned about, in other words, they really want to know if you are having thoughts of hurting yourself or hurting others. It's very, very important. It is important for your safety and for the safety of those who you care about. Please make arrangements to be evaluated. Do it as soon as possible. Let us know how it turns out. We care about you and want to help you in any way we can. Wishing you all the best. ![]() ![]()

Try going to the OCD forum, and yopu will find a lot of others have the same thoughts, also called obsessions. Then, us people with OCD, do compulsions such as counting, checking to try and control the anxiety. If you have OCD, it can be treated. If not, you still need to consult a psychiatrist and therapist. You're obviously hurting and need help.

Thoughts proceed actions. Don't walk for help, run. It is better to ask for professional help than do nothing. Peace - Dennis
