If thou of fortune be bereft
And of thine earthly store have left
Two loaves, sell one, and with the dole
Buy hyacinths, to feed the soul.

((((((fuzzy)))))),

Beautiful. It is so important not just to feel our bodies, but also our souls.

Hello Bear!

The author is not unknown anymore. The words were so beautiful that I came here one more time and researched a bit. These are translated from Persian. These are the work of Saadi Shirazi and the name of the book is Gulistan (The Rose Garden).

Thanks again for sharing.

I went looking for whatever I could find about the verse and where it's from. It seems to get quoted a fair bit, usually credited to the same author (whose name is variously rendered as Sadi, Saadi or Sa'di). Here's his Wikipedia article: Saadi (poet).

Blogger Priscilla Stuckey writes:

Some years ago I discovered this poem all over the Web, attributed in most places to Sa’di in the Gulistan. I went to my closest university library, checked out the Gulistan, and spent some days reading it. The message of the poem fit Sa’di’s philosophy, but I never did find the exact reference.

So where, exactly, does this poem come from? If any of you have the exact citation, whether in the Gulistan or from some other source, I’d love to know about it. Either post a comment or contact me by email .... Even better, send me the Persian original (if it does come from Sa’di)...
GIGA Quotes credits it to Saadi in the Gulistan apparently without question but although they give more detailed citations for some other quotes they don't happen to, for this one.

Anyway, thanks, Fuzzybear, for posting the quote and while I'm at it...

my suggestion for an additional feature,
added with Photoshop.

Thanks Fool Zero for the valueable comments. You point about the exact citation was a good one and made me research more. And now I have found a connection between these words and Sadi's verses in Gulistan:

http://www.archive.org/stream/cu3192...e/n11/mode/2up

This book named "In Sadi's rose garden" was privately published by John Terry White in 1907 for his friends. You can find this verse at the bottom of the left page. A beautiful book by John T. White nevertheless and you will find a lot of other great verses. So I think the lines cannot be directly attributed to Sadi, but the theme definitely relates to the meassage of Sadi.

Thanks for the research, zilchhour! So I guess White was writing in the spirit of Sadi and in response to him.

BTW, the author's name was James Terry White. There's no Wikipedia article on him specifically but "James Terry White and Company" seem to have published other books around that time. Here's one such citation.
Thanks for this!
