So i didn't get the job i wanted at the hospital because i screwed up the interview by getting so anxious that my mind went blank! The position was in mental health, so one of the interviewers recognised it for what it was and helped me recompose myself...... But they told me i didn't get the job because i struggled to answer some of their questions.
I don't know what to do. I am still going to apply for the mental health nursing course which begins next february, but i stand less of a chance of getting on that course if i don't have any care experience... I could try the care homes, but they usually want people with experience. The hospital doesn't have any other vacancies of my level at the moment. Do i just go and get any old rubbish job, like i've been doing for the last 10 years?? I really need money, but i also need to feel like i'm going somewhere in life. All of the jobs i've had in recent years have made me feel so depressed and worthless... I don't know if i could do it again. ![]() ![]() Stupid, stupid, stupid Lady Chaos! ![]()

Have you thought about taking a speech class? If that is not an option, maybe you could read a short chapter of a book to a friend who also has read the chapter. Reading aloud will get you accustomed to hearing your own voice, and give you a chance to practice breathing (When stressed many hold their breath unknowingly). The questions from the friend will help you get used to thinking on your toes. If that process helps you can do it again as often as you like until you are more comfortable. Some looking for jobs go to interviews knowing they likely do not have a realistic chance of getting the job, yet benefit from going through the interviewing process. Learn and practice the grounding skills here: http://forums.psychcentral.com/showt...t=16719&page=2 Practice the anxiety and panic tips I posted at your profile. Review and learn from the cognitive distortions here: http://forums.psychcentral.com/showthread.php?t=108173 One rejection does NOT make you worthless and stupid. It is a challenge for you to work on what you need to do to present yourself as the one best qualified for the job at the next interview. Good luck. |

![]() Can you put the interview down to good experience, now that you know what you need to do next time. Any care experience will help you get the job you want, that might mean volunteering for a while. Volunteering shows that you really want to work, not just a job but something you love and enjoy. It also looks very good on a CV or application form. Keep trying, you'll get there.

I notice The Byz picked up on this too. I won't make you promise to stop saying it but I would like you to look at what it was about.
Have you begun sorting out for whose benefit you said that? I was wondering if whatever prompted you to call yourself stupid just now, might also sometimes prompt you to freeze up in interviews and other stressful situations. |

I know the feeling. We sometimes put so much pressure on ourselves. I once took voice lessons (not for singing) but simply to help me with my presentation skills. I used to think that I had a "weak" voice and wanted to improve my confidence in business meeting situations. The teacher had me read excerpts of scripts from famous movies. I really got a lot out of this and transformed a weakness into a strength.
You sound like a super-caring person. You should feel great about your ability and desire to help others. Being a really loving person is a great quality. God bless and good luck! |

Thanks everyone.
![]() ![]() Yes. My dad used to tell me, my brother, and my mum that we were stupid all the time. Now it's something we all seem to say when we've made a mistake or are down. Now he must feel like the stupid one, he lost my mum and my brother, and i only see him when necessary, plus he has no friends. I know it sounds harsh, but this man is toxic and derseves nothing more.
