One weird thing I do is contort my hand in weird ways without thinking about it, I was just wondering what this could be part of, I found a picture of myself doing this.
Anyway, sound familiar? ![]()

I'm sorry, but I don't have any sort of answer for that, but am very curious to know of other's replies as I've seen my daughter do the very same thing often, (among other behaviors).
Be patient for responses. Shangrala ![]()

This happens sometimes when people have strokes or in a coma - the muscles shorten and go into spasm. But I'm sure that's not what you're referring to. Have you always done this or just recently. If it's recent it could be med related.
It might also be tension - where your muscles get rigid. My FIL used to have this facial expression where he sort of looked like he's smiling(showing his teeth), but not really smiling. Several of his children, including my husband does it. My youngest daughter does it and it usually happens when she's intensely concentrating. I'm going to ask her pediatrician what the exact term, for this. Try to become aware of the habit and correct yourself every time you do it. Good luck in finding a correct diagnosis.

I'm not sure, it might have started after I took my meds. I open my mouth randomly too and it's weird.

I've noticed with my daughter how, when she's excited (tho only when sitting and focused on something), she opens mouth as tho gasping for air, then calmly closes...repeats this behavior several times, still, only when sitting and suddenly excited. She rocks her body with hands clasped together as though a burst of sudden joy overcomes her, then relaxes again..until the next excitement overcomes her, repeats.
I never really thought that this behavior was out of the norm, (though what is normal? ![]() She also walks on the balls of her feet, sometimes on tip-toes, but never on her entire foot. Always walks leaning slightly forward, sometimes looks as though she's gunna tip over forward. (She has been dx'd with scoliosis, so that may be contributed to her posture while walking). My entire family is known to use facial expression for emphasis of activity....lol. Especially my sister. Omg. The excessiveness of mouth movements...looooool...as though it assists to achieving her goal obtained, (usually when active in phsycial competition of some sort). Shangrala ![]()

I would google the side affects for the medication you are taking just to rule it out.

people do have different things they do when they are not thinking about it. these things are called mannerisms/habits. Some people without thinking about it twirl their hair, others suck their thumbs or fingers, some people tap their fingers together, some people bounce a leg or two. some people snap their fingers, crack their knuckles, lick their lips, tap their fingers on table tops, some people trade on established habit/mannerism for another. I twirl my hair, cross and uncross my fingers, crack my knuckles. my doctor says for me it has nothing to do with any mental disorders, physical disorders, and nothing to do with my meds, just the way I am and its natural. ![]() |

The symptoms you are relating sound like they could be a mild form of EPS (extra-pyramidal symptoms), or TD (Tardive Dyskinesia).
Both of these things can be side effects of psychotropic medication. I would let your Dr. know sooner than later. The EPS usually goes away with time and/or dose adjustments but sometimes the TD can be permanent. Here are some links for info: http://schizophrenia.emedtv.com/extr...-symptoms.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tardive_dyskinesia

I agree, it just sounds like it's a habit. If it's not painful, I would not worry about it too much... it does not look that weird, btw. |

I also agree. Why I've never mentioned a word about it to my daughter. It's just a natural thing for her. Mannerisms which contribute to the individual and nothing to worry about. What makes them so special and unique. Shangrala ![]()

Whatever the cause, I hope the solution is easily implemented or nothing to be concerned about.

I agree with Eelysium...Eps and or TD can be very seroius side effects. Ive had patients experience it and it did not go away with med reduction because they had been exposed to the chemicals for too long. Please check it out with your P-Doc ASAP!!
