I got an email from my apartment complex telling me that there was a water mane break. As if that wasn't bad enough, I now have to boil my water for the next 24hrs. That wouldn't be so bad if all my dishes were not dirty in the sink since it has been finals week and I have no clean clothes. So Since I don't want to use contaminated water to clean my clothes I can't wash them with the quarters I just got. MY kitchen will have to be cleaned with boiled water. I just started an antibiotic that is making me sick. Why does everything happen at once? I hate my life. Plus I'm supposed to sing in a concert tonight. But I can't take a shower with contaminated (by what I don't know) water. I'm waiting for the school pharmacy to open up again to talk to them before the weekend about the meds. Did I say that I hated my life?

----- Two Alternative Replies ----- Please choose the one you prefer and pretend you never saw the other. ![]() ----- Reply A ----- ![]() ----- Reply B ----- If your water had become seriously contaminated -- with raw sewage, for example -- it would take more than boiling to make it fit to drink and more than 24 hours of normal use to get the crud out of the pipes. The precautions they're actually taking suggest that they think some plain old dirt might have got into the pipes while they were working on them, so they can't guarantee for those 24 hours that the water will be fully up to drinking-water standards. If you've ever swum in a river or lake, the water there almost certainly didn't meet drinking-water standards either. If you fill a bathtub with drinking-quality water, that water, too, will fail to meet the standards the moment a person gets in the tub. If you don't want to boil your dishwater, you can sanitize your dishes with chlorine bleach after washing. The recommended concentration is about 100 parts per million (ppm) of chlorine, or one tablespoon of liquid bleach in two gallons of water. You wash and rinse the dishes as usual, then dip them in the solution and let them drip dry. You don't need strictly drinking-quality water for washing clothes. Besides, the heat in the dryer will kill most kinds of nasties that may still be in the clothes after washing. Good luck! ![]() |

It's still all a big pain in the tush on top of everything else. Wish one of us lived nearby Googley and you could come to our house and do laundry/get ready for your evening and get a little rest and relief.

EEEEK! I'm sorry this is happening, I'm also wondering if you have a friend's place you could shower at or school facilities (dorms, gym) you could use?
Did you get to talk to the doctors at all about the meds?

Thank you everyone for your support.
FoolZ- Thank you for the information about the water. I think I will go back to washing my hands instead of using sanitizer. The water scares me because it is brown. I would be scared that dirt would be deposited on everything I try and clean/wash (ie dishes/clothes.) The concert went well. I was able to talk to the pharmacy. Hopefully every time I take the antibiotic I don't end up feeling like****. Next time I'm going to take it with food and see if that helps. I'm waiting for dinner to arrive right now. SWA- I thought about paper/plastic, but don't have the money to afford it. I did buy some bottled water to drink/ brush teeth. Brown water scares me. EEEK. |

I'm glad you went to the concert! I'm glad you were able to talk to the pharmacist, too. Buying bottled water was a good idea! Hopefully, the tap water will be safe enough to use soon! Sleep well & take care of yourself!

Googley, I didn't realize your water was brown. Chances are, that's just rust-type crud that's been in the pipes all along and recently got stirred up/knocked loose. You're right, though, it might be hard to remove from things like clothes.
I don't know what brown water tastes like. I don't think I've ever wanted to know. I hope by the time you read this it's already cleared up and you're back in business. ![]() |

Your water may need to be boiled before being directly consumed, but it might be okay for washing clothes and dishes. If you aren't sure, you could contact the apt complex manager to ask. How long will you need to boil the water? Glad that the concert went well ![]() |
