Thanks for clarifying.

Some legitimate research seeks peer reviewed publication. Some other legitimate research is writing masters / doctoral theses or presenting seminars. Not all legitimate research is conducted by professionals who are members of professional associations. And even for those who are, different professional associations in different countries have different professional obligations.

For instance, I am a philosopher. Philosophy doesn't have ethical boards to consult before conducting research (probably because the ethicists are in the philosophy department already LOL!). Actually, its because we don't do experiments. We don't typically do observations either, but some philosophers are empirically / naturalistically inclined.

I guess when I think of dodgey research I'm thinking experiments. Where something / someone is manipulated to see what will happen so that we can learn something of the laws of what follows from what. I'm not sure of the history of dodgey naturalistic observations in psychology or in any other science. I would be interested to know more about that.

I have been tempted to use parts of posts off boards before (not here - but another board I am a member of). Solely with the purpose of illustration in my thesis. I looked into whether I could do that or not... To the best of my knowledge I could quote parts of their posts and so long as they were properly referenced (the URL and time / date of access) that would be considered fair use.

I think I agree that there is something a little dodgey about quoting someone (even properly referenced) without their permission. And more dodgey still when you appreciate you would likely have a bit of a task in trying to show them that you are trying to use what they have to say to help people and help further knowledge and most certainly not to harm them or shame them or judge them.

A problem can be in the time it takes to obtain permission. Write a paper... Send it on to the people you decided to quote... Hope that they understand the paper adequately... Hope that they give you permission or thats a fair amount of work that has just gone down the toilet...

I appreciate your elaborating on steps you can take if you find out that someone has been using the site for research. I still think that you can't guarantee that it won't happen, however. You might want to promise that you will take all the available steps to prevent this from happening. But at the end of the day I'm not at all sure that you can prevent legitimate research, and thats to say nothing of all those dodgey research projects out there.

sometimes we choose to be invisable so we can respond to pm's and read various posts but when ever we reply to posts, invisable or not, it is not hard to work out who is online at the time.

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
