I have experienced a tremendous amount of sadness and feelings of impotency with what little coverage I have allowed myself to view. My heart hurts for the human beings who have felt so abandoned and uncared for. Many could not leave, What would I do? I don't have any extra money ever? Could I leave with my family and all of my pets if a disaster were heading my way?

My energy at this time is spent doing what I can from a distance and putting out as much positive energy as I can to these people and their families. They need our love and compassion. I have been angry too. What can each of us do? I bought a case of formular and a case of diapers as well as ensure and left it at a local drop off. The best I could do. It will help someone.

By that same token, how about that young parent in front of you at the drug store with an obviously ill baby and not the $3.00 co-pay for the antibiotic the baby needs? Three dollars, sure, many days I have zero cash in my pockets, but I usually figure out a way to help. I paid for the babies meds. Or how about the person in front of you at the store who runs a little short? Yup, I have given them the money too. Someone did it for me once. Remember the movie "Pay it Forward"? Love it. Maybe we can each live like this and make an impact on those around us?

My son drove the 4.5 hours from a reunion to our home tonight. He is a good driver, an agressive driver though, swearing at others etc. There was a bad accident and we needed to change lanes. He attempted it with agressive driving. I told him to beep and signal the car next to us, can we enter? Well, never fails, of course we could! He was totally surprised. I always do this with a happy smile and a wave.

Why am I saying this here? Easy, we can each do what we can for the hurricane survivors, and every day we can make a difference by our own actions within the human race.

I do not regret limiting my exposure to another trauma, and advise all who are becoming overwhelmed to do likewise. I DO know what is going on..as I have lived it.. injustice is never pretty, nor is anyone's suffering.

Here's something you CAN do (if you can send money through Salvation Army or Samaritan's Purse, do so.. but also
Write notes to the survivors. There's an organization that you can send them to, who is going to be couriering them into the disaster areas. Write the note to Dear Friend, and include ideas of God's love and that this is not His punishment upon them.

Send your notes of encouragement to: HAVEN TODAY Box 5100 costa Mesa, CA 92628

Sky,
What a lovely thought, great info., you are so supportive and helpful to those wishing to help others. Bless you, dear lady. A KATRINA OUTRAGE
I hope all that can help these people will come in over abundance, I hope all that help will be respected and appreciated. If I was not strapped with caring for my sickly mom and then my own family, I would be in my car heading down there in a heartbeat, even was discussing this tonight at home. Who knows, I just might pack up and offer my services.
Thanks for sharing the info to all of us.

Take care now,
DE

My two cents:

I doubt I would have evacuated, knowing my financial situation and not having any place else to go. In retrospect I would like to think I would have, but I have been through a couple hurricanes having grown up on the east coast, and they are usually survivable. When I'm preparing for a storm I fill the tub with water and every empty pop bottle I have in the house and I freeze as many as I can get into the freezer to keep my food ok for a couple days longer and all of that stuff, so I wouldn't be one of the ones starving the next day... I wouldn't necessarily be happy with the food choices from my pantry, but I keep enough on hand to get by.... BUT I grew up in rural New England, we get blizzards, and hurricanes often enough that it is second nature to prepare to tough it out on our own for a while. When you live in a city, there is a store on almost every block, you run out to get something to eat for dinner or pick it up on the way home, keeping food at home isn't always part of your lifestyle, and services are always right at hand. If you never have had to survive on what you've got, how could you know to prepare for that??? These people got b*tchslapped by mother nature, and no one there has had to deal with anything like this, it's like asking St Cloud MN to prepare for a tsunami, so people are doing the best they can, and making a bunch of mistakes in the process, and all we and the media are doing is saying "Look at those bozo's, they don't even know what they're doing" I'll bet that Mr and Mrs Katrina Survivor appreciate that, huh?
