OUCH, OUCH, OUCH, & much more that that for both me & my horse.

We went out on a trail ride into the desert with my trainer & 2 other riders from the ranch. We were out about 1 1/2 miles from the ranch & oops. My horse stumbled on a little mound of dirt. The initial stumble seemed to be ok, then when he was recovering from that, he must have caught his front leg with his back hoof & stumbled nose first into the ground. That was when I just couldn't "sit back" any more & over the left side of his neck I went. Landed on my head which thank heavens always has a riding helmet on it. Then I don't remember much if anything until I was trying to get up on the right side of him. My trainer was telling him to be careful not to step on me & I remember struggling to get the reins out of his way so he wouldn't stumble again on them.

His leg was gashed open about 6 inches long & 2 inches wide......it seemed that I had a very sore head along with seeing double & blury, a lower arm that was all scraped up & starting to swell along with a shoulder that didn't like my arm putting any pressure on it. My trainer took off her sock & wrapped it around my horses let to keep the bleeding down & then took off on the horse she was riding & headed for the ranch to get the truck & trailer. The other 2 riders stayed there with me & my horse & about 45 minutes later, she, her truck & the horse trailer arrived across the desert. She had called his vet & he was going to be there soon. We got back to the ranch & to sum it up, my horse always has my priority in the line of care. We had to knock him out & then the leg was sutured. After that was accomplished, I had my other horses to care for.

Of course my yearling came down with what seems to be a mild case of strangles, so I have to clean out that absess daily & have to be very careful because of how contageous that desiese is. Needless to say, the fall occured late in the morning & I didn't finish up with my horses until after 5pm. I am home & hurting.....with a massive headache......& a slight consern about how the fall might have effected the neck fusion I had 5 years ago. I think it probably makes my neck invincable....but there is always that doubt.

I am on such a high dose of fentynal for my migraines, I am not sure if I would feel anything really hurt or not. Gut feel tells me to go have it checked out in the ER given that I have taken some tylenol & no effect except for the headache getting worse. I know that by tomorrow I will probably not be getting out of bed very easily......however there is the fact that my horse requires Antibiotice 2 x/day for 6 more days along with the dressing change daily. Of course he couldn't let my yearling get my whole attention with her abcess & had to get in on the picture too.

I am sitting here trying to get some relief from the pain but think that I will probably end up in the ER just to give myself a warm tummy feeling that nothing is truely messed up with me. I haven't had a headache for 3 years since my migraines were brought under control so I really hate feeling pain in my head again even on the massive amount of pain killers I am on for the migraines.

What a day......I have been feeling the case of "when it rains it pours", but now, that really is the case.

& one more OUCH for good measure,
Debbie

Mama, what a day, indeed! Please do get to the ER, have them check you over just in case, you'll get that warm tummy feeling. Might as well do it and get it over with as soon as possible. In fact I'm not even gonna write anymore cause you should be on your way to the ER!

Very tender hugs sent to you, get well quick!

Sarah, Jen, Parker,

Yes, I did go to the ER......they did an xray of my neck because of the neck fusion I had 5 years ago. It showed that there is a neck strain. So need the moist heat on it. I have been trying to take tylonal for the headache with no success......pain is getting worse...& eyes not able to focus even while typing here. I called my Dr cause am getting more sick to my stomach.....guessing that is from feeling dizzy though. He suggested seeing if it will get better over night otherwise he wants me in the hospital. I really don't remember much about the fall at all which is kinda scarry. I really can't afford to land in the hospital since I have to care for my horses.......can't let me get in the way of that. I think I will call it a night now.....really feeling lousy & maybe with some sleep I may start to feel better.

When I was in the ER, the Nurse practitioner asked me what I wanted for the pain......well, I am on the max level of pain med for my migraines so afraid to add any more & she agreed since slowered breathing is a problem with a higher level of narchotics than what I already am on. That does make it rough to treat a pain that is higher than the level I am already being treated for......not a good place to be in at times.

Anyway, think I am going to go to sleep now.....that is about all I feel like doing.....maybe I can sleep the pain away.....or at least won't feel it as much when I am asleep. I know there is a concussion going on here since I am not seeing well.....but hope it will get better instead of worse like it has done tonight.

Thanks for your concern & encouragement to go to the ER......I appreciate your care,
Debbie

{{{{{{{{{{{{Debbie}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} I'm so, so sorry for your pain!! I have migraines, too, and they ain't fun!! In fact, had one today. I also had difficulty focusing although the pain wasn't all that bad. My tummy is still doing flip-flops... so... we can keep each other company, what do you think? Had a whopper of a horse accident today

Hope you can find someone to help you with the horses. It's the pits when you have to take care of yourself and your pets, too! And them with big owies!! Had a whopper of a horse accident today Maybe your trainer will help you with the injured horse while you take care of Izzy. Don't try to be a hero. Get someone to lighten the load for you, ok?

Please take care of YOU. Had a whopper of a horse accident today

Sky,

Thank you so much for your gentle hugs.....they are much appreciated...the gentler the better for sure.....I woke up this morning feeling like I got hit by an 18 wheeler....you always know just what to provide to help. Hope you are felling better now too.

Mellors,

Thanks for your concern. I was glad my Dr here said he would direct admit me if necessary so I wouldn't have to go through "that 5 hour ER wait." I just started going to him & he was the one that admitted me to the hospital from the ER when I had bad dehydration this summer.....what a way to get known as a patient.....lol.

Tomi,

Oh how horrible having a migraine while trying to move.....& unpack..especially when you are trying to figure out where things need to go. Maybe the migraine came from the smoke from the fire.....I know that oder always made my migraines worse. Hope your migraine is getting better now.

Jen,

Thanks for your hugs.....really appreciated....like with sky.....need to be really soft hugs right now.

Karen,

Thanks for your concern too.....knowing you just are getting over surgery....I am really hoping you are doing better now too..& your recovery will be quick.....glad to see you here & posting...must be feeling some better.

Jbug,

Thanks for your caring.......I think my horse got the worse end of the deal actually. His stitches won't be coming out for 2 weeks....& daily wrapping & antibiltice 2 x/day for 6 days is necessary besides cleaning & wrapping the wound.......my animals just always want my attention.

Silver,

Thank you for your thoughts for both of us.....I really appreciate your concern.

When I woke up, I couldn't get my body out of bed.....I thought it hurt yesterday.....but it seems like the true hurts come the next day when all the muscles realize what happened. I don't think there is a part of my body that doesn't hurt right now. I have a call in to my pain specialist because I don't feel comfortable taking anything for pain considering how much I am on for my migraines.....what a catch 22 to be in. I need to know what I can take for the hurtz. I actually never thought anything could hurt with the amount of fentynal I am on to stop my migraines.

I think the worse part is that when I am typing, I am really starting to feel sick to my stomach really bad. I have to go mix up the morning antibiotic & have my husband drive me to the ranch to take care of my little old man.....he has gotta be hurting today too.

Gotta go, need to keep some feeling ok to take care of the horses.....really starting to feel not ok the longer I have to use my head & eyes to type.

Thank you all again for your concern,
Debbie

((( Debbie and Horse ))) I am so sorry...maybe they can tweak your migraine meds back a tad and add some other pain med to address these pains? I was shocked they allowed you to go to sleep often they want to keep someone awake when they get hurt neck or head and black out ...Why do you think your horse tripped? Is that normal for a horse to do now and then? Many prayers and hugs

WW,

Thank you for your thoughts.....like usual.....never got a call back from any of my Dr's so put a after hours call in to the pain specialist. They told me to just go back to the ER with the information of what I am on & they will determine the level of pain med that is safe.

Sleeps,

Thank you for your prayers & hugs. Yes, horses do trip & stumble at times they are definitely NOT sure footed as mules......He tripped over a small mound of soft dirt from what the foot prints showed. Got his left hoof caught in the dirt for the initial stumble....then on recovery hit the front leg with his back leg gashing his front leg....think the pain from the gash must have taken him down to his front knees....thus a quick throw over the left side of his neck. He is 26 years old with quite a bit of arthritis.....& he was warmed up, but guess he doesn't really pick up his feet at well as a younger horse does. He also has a disadvantage in that he is partially blind in his left eye also....& is mostly trusting that I will not take him anywhere he will get hurt.....let him down on that account....poor baby....hoping he will trust me in the future after this. He has even stumbled in the dressage arena at times but never to this extent. We were taking him out to working on his trailing so I can use him for ponying Izzy & getting her used to the outside of the ranch.

I really think they thought it would go away quicker than it has...they didn't realize how hard I hit the ground & not remembering anything, I probably got a kick in the head also by the looks of my helmet.....I really don't understand the thinking of the doctors but the nurse practitioner last night said that they usually don't do the cat scan initially because all the dizziness, nausea, & headache usually go away within a couple of hours so wait to do anything if it doesn't go away within 24 hours.

Fuzzy,

Thanks so much for your gentle bearhugs for both my horse & me.....really appreciate that.

DE,

Thank you for your good wishes of love & healing for me & my horses....that is so kind of you.

SpazKatt,

Yes, the first day I got home after all the Dr were closed....but called after hours.....told to go to the ER if it was bad. First night at ER, they seemed to blow off the head issues & just xrayed the neck which is sprained even with having a neck fusion about 5 years ago. I pretty much stayed in bed Friday except for having to go care for my horses. I was still feeling really sick & got no calls back from my Dr's so when I called after hours, they said to go back to ER & have them check out the head....only thought they gave me for not looking into it the first time was that the problems usually go away within a few hours....so last night they did more tests.

Yes, I did go back to the ER last night.....was tired of feeling dizzy & sick & blurry vision.....let alone all the aching body (which I knew was normal). I finally got into see someone after 5 hours of waiting.....they unwillingly gave me a demoral shot since I am allergic to morphine & its derivitives like delodid. They also decided to do a cat scan which luckily turned out negative. They said that the dizziness can come from the fluid in your inner ear is set into sloshing when the head is hit & that is causing the dizziness....so they gave me a perscription for Antivert. I do have some Robaxin already at home from a oops I had with my horse earlier this year when I passed out in the pen with my filly...& they kinda walked over me. Today I feel like I was hit by a smaller truck than yeaterday so this is very good. The demoral gave me some relief & hopefully it will just start fading away.

One of the nurses at the ER had just been bucked off her horse a month ago & fractured her ribs.....so we were exchanging stories about our horses......a good distraction.

Thank you all for your caring, loving thoughts for me & my horses. It just seems to take more time now that I am older to get over these bumps....at least my hip wasn't fractured like the last time I was thrown....I am getting too old for this kind of stuff.

Debbie

Glad to hear eskie...although I'm very dissapointed that they shrugged off your injury so quickly! Something like that happened here at my school. A girl was hit by a hockey puck and the doctors said she'd be fine, the next day she died because of all the fluid pressure on her brain.

Well, It's been a week & with the cat scan ok, having a mild concussion & only a neck strain too......the only thing I didn't bother with was my shoulder which in my mind was only bruised. I haven't been doing much this week, taking it easy except for the care of my horses & his big booboo on his let, the aches & ouches seemed to settle down.

Wednesday, I decided to get back on one of my trainers horses & take a lunge line lesson. Uses muscles again that got stiff & thought things were doing just fine....& then, I did the feeding of the horses & hauling around the feed. I realized that my shoulder was aching any time I put pressure on the arm. For some reason, the pain is getting to be more rather than less. I remember that my orthopecis specialist had told me that after a week, anything sore should be getting better & if that wasn't the case then there may be more wrong that needs to be looked at.

Considering that it is still black & blue & can't handle pressure on the arm or any kind.....I decided to make an appointment with him to get it checked out. I'm getting an x-ray of it done tomorrow & have an appointment with him on Monday to check if there might be a possible fracture in that bone. I feel like a patchwork quilt that is being mended bit & piece at a time......

Hoping it is just a bruised bone.....best case senario. Even if there was a fracture, I don't think there is much that can be done about it......but at least I will know what is going on if anything.

Will see how it goes on Monday,
Debbie
