"I have been wondering about how psychologists, psychiatrists, and other professionals in the mental health field might comment ethically on the personalities of public figures. When might it be helpful for a psychiatrist to raise concerns as to the mental health of a politician, or for a psychologist to explain non-conscious processes using the example of someone in the media spotlight?"

I don't think professionals in the mental health field can comment as professionals in the mental health field about public personalities other than as being their personal opinions since they do not know the public personality first hand? Yes, social scientists can give learned opinions about society and the actions of those inhabiting it ("in my professional opinion that looks like something a peson with paranoid schizophrenia might do" but not label the person who did it as having paranoid schizophrenia) but I'm only interested in hearing from Oprah's personal psychiatrist/therapist (she's never been in therapy) when someone gives a professional mental health evaluation of Oprah. I would think everyone else could possibly get hit with libel suits if they didn't first do the "in my personal opinion. . ." rather than "professional opinion and if Oprah's psychiatrist/therapist did that while she was living they'd get a breach of confidentially charge leveled at them, at the very least.
That's why we want to hear from Congresswoman Giffords doctors, themselves, instead of "a" doctor that works for the networks telling us about being shot in the head in general. One wonders how the HIPPA laws relate to public figures? Must be different, kind of like how it's harder to get a charge of libel to stick if you're famous.

i have conflict of thought re a pdoc or T labeling anyone who they have not evaluated themselves in a theraputic setting. it seems dangerous to me. perna i liked your question re hippa act re public figures too. yes they are public but it doesn't give license for pdocs and Ts to spout their opinion on someone they truly have no business giving their opinion. that would be like an MD giving a medical evaluation of a lawyer, etc without physically seeing him in an office setting, testing, etc.

I don't even know who he is! Yes, I see him mentioned in headlines, but I don't know who he is or what he did or what is his significance. Ignorance is sometimes bliss.

He stars in the TV sitcom "Two and a Half Men" http://www.cbs.com/primetime/two_and_a_half_men/ which I watch and it is really sleazy, very much in keeping with Sheen's alleged personality. My husband can't stand that I watch it and the more I watch it the more I agree with him (my husband) about its worthlessness, even as "entertainment".
