So last Monday my department had our monthly meeting at work. This is the time when the boss gets up on his extremely high horse and tells us how crappy we're doing. Great way to start the week, huh? Well, he's royally hacked because the shop is always a mess and the dollars are WAY down because the salesmen (not part of our department) aren't getting good bids. He then proceeds to tell us that we're all being a bunch of (insert dirty word that rhymes with wussies) right in front of the two office assistants... both female. Well, whatever. I've been called ten times worse. And for the record, this meeting is really the only time that the boss is like this. Other times he's so-so.

So off to New Orleans I go. That night I'm out at a restraunt with the guys from the Houston district and a couple from Dallas. One is from our district is the new guy and is what we call a remote tech. He reports to our district but lives several hours away. I asked him if he was going to have to start coming down from Oklahoma for these monthly meetings. He asked me what kinds of things we talk about in the meetings and I, being the smart arse I am, told him that we talk about how we're all a bunch of (insert the dirty word) in front of the girls.

This made it back to the boss and he was hacked that someone found out he had said that. So he came up to me hootin and hollerin about how he's probably gonna catch a bunch of crap from human resources about that. Again, being the smart arse, I said, "Well, if you didn't want to catch crap about it then why did you say it? Something to think about." Well, I guess that was the wrong thing to say because he kinda turned red in the face. He said, "I've got half a mind to write you up for smarting off like that!" And of course I responded, "So your putting your full resources into this then?" He had to stiffle a laugh, which I think is what saved me from getting written up. Just thought I'd share my day.

Ry

I'd hardly call it brave. That was my ingrained stupidity talking there. I think I'm lucky I didn't get fired.

Yes, you are lucky you didn't get fired... but he would have had to lie to do that.... not impossible... but it wouldn't have been a cut and dry case. You gotta lay low for a while Almost got written up at work today... long (hands Ryan the duct tape!)

Hmm, I don't know I guess. I have the opposite problem in never saying anything about anything. I guess I admire your ability to speak up. I guess too far on either side is not as wonderful as having a balance between the two though. Still glad it all worked out for you. Almost got written up at work today... long

Actually, Ryan, your boss sounds like he's the ignorant one, especially because a labor law specialist would see a
cut-n-dried case of verbal abuse & sexual harassment. If he was working at the hotel I work at, he'd already be facing a class-action lawsuit.
Unless he worked on graveyard shift... we specialize in harassing our coworkers.

I swear, most all bosses go to the same Be-A-Bad-Boss-School.

I love how you responded to him.

I heard a radio program recently on workplace bullying, apparently we in the States are far behind many other countries when it comes to awareness and regulation of this.
