I just found out from my mom that my dad (well, step-dad, but whatever) has had numbness/tingling in his legs and feet and hasn't slept in a few days. He went to the doc and was told he has classic symptoms of guillain barre syndrome. This hasn't been confirmed yet, but he has to go back to the doc tomorrow and will probably be hospitalized for tests on Monday to confirm this. This disorder can cause paralysis. Most people completely recover from this with proper treatment, but prayers or good thoughts and wishes or vibes or whatever it is that you do are most definately needed. Thanks guys. Love you all.

first of all, my prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.....*hugs*

my mother has suffered from the same exact symptoms for years........
she suffers from RLS, restless leg syndrome...

i wonder if your fathers doctor had looked into that at all???

my mother was misdiagnosed at first, but then got a second and third opinion and it turned out to be RLS.....

she was 2 weeks away from having uneeded surgery!

just a thought.....

i hope all goes well..... Prayers, good thoughts, wishes, or whatever needed

Thanks everyone.

Tiny, the docs aren't exactly sure that this is the issue at hand so there will be tests run. Apparantly a spinal tap tells for sure if this is guillain barre syndrome or not. This is all coming from my mom and her research. I'll have to do my own because I have a hard time keeping details straight. The docs do, however, want to run the tests to make sure the treatment is proper. Surgery isn't being spoken of. I'm not even sure if surgery is a treatment for this. Again, I'll have to research this a bit more. Anyway, thanks for all the prayers and good vibes. I'll post tomorrow after I find out what the doc has to say. Love you guys.

Update time.

I woke up this morning to a voicemail from my brother saying that my dad had to go to the ER. The numbness/tingling in his feet has turned to pain and moved from his feet to his calves (last night) and to his thighs by this morning. The GP said to get him to the ER. Given that he's not showing physical signs of weakness (symptom of guillain barre syndrome) the ER doc doesn't think that that's the case. I'm waiting by the phone for bloodwork results. Whatever it is that you do, please keep doing it. Love you guys.

Best wishes Ryan...

They'll find out what it is and take care of it. Sounds like they are on top of this.

Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

My dad is doing better. Thank you so much for your prayers and wishes. He went to the ER and was told he didn't have the Guilliome Barre syndrome by the doc there because he didn't have muscle weakness or slowed reflexes. He was told to follow up with the family doc and also referred to a neurologist. The family doc said that the ER doc was retarded because in the beginning stages of Barre syndrome, muscle weakness and slowed reflexes aren't always a symptom... sometimes they come later in the illness. Either way, my dad responded well to the pain meds and he's feeling a little better. The family doc said that this is probably a mind case that is on the downhill slide of running it's course, but went ahead and told him to follow up with the neurologist just to make sure. He's not sleeping a whole lot just yet, but more last night than the previous few nights. He's going to try to go to work tomorrow (tues) and see how that goes. He'll hopefully continue to feel better and also get in to see the neurologist sometime this week. Again, thanks everyone. Take care.

Ryan
