So I went to eat at my dad and his new wife's today. My grandpa was there. After dinner I was walking around the living room and my grandpa asked if I was nervous about something. I said no. He said I must be because I was pacing. Does pacing always mean one is nervous? I pace all the time because I like to be moving rather than sitting still. But I never feel nervous when I pace. Do you think I am sub-consciously nervous and that is why I pace? Or can one pace without being nervous?

No, I don't think it always implies nervousness although it can. I pace all the time wether I'm on the phone or listening to music or doing anything really. I think for me I pace mostly when something's on my mind.

I generally pace when I'm on the phone.

I don' think it's a sign of nervousness, just maybe excess energy, which is different.

Could be ADHD or perhaps hypomania or mania. Or too much caffeine?

I paced for a long time yesterday... but I was freaking out... and I have ADHD... and just drank a frappacino...

it is a symptom of nervousness -But - people pace for other reasons too - concentration, weight loss/exercise/ habit/measurement/...

Hiya Squirrel!

I'm a resident pacer when I'm in the psych wards. I find the staff don't like it because it makes them nervous. It's not that I am, but that they are. I find that for me pacing calms me down, helps me gain clarity and insight and generally soothes me. Having said that, the faster I pace, the more agitated I am. Pacing can be an aggressive act. My feedback would be to pay attention to how you're feeling while you're pacing.

Hey Squirrel! Love your photo!

Pacing can be a sign of nervousness, but not necessarily. I'd say it depends on how you feel when you are pacing. I'll get up and walk around just because I'm tired of sitting. My husband used to walk back and forth when he talked. We used to joke that if you nailed his feet to the floor he wouldn't be able to talk!

Personally, if your pacing doesn't bother you I wouldn't worry about it.
