Hello,

I wanted to ask a question to all you fine people.
It's about walking around and thinking... More precisly thinking like 'out loud'. I don't mean talking thinking but actuelly hearing your own voice in your head kind as thinking voice and actuelly awsering yourself and all.
And with walking i mean just walk to think about things...
So i've asked this at people from all over the internet and this seems to be pritty common among the people that awsered.
I was wondering how people here looked at it...
For instance do you wander around just to think about something? Or think 'out loud'?
And when do you think it's crossing a line...

I hope you've understood the question... I seem to be having a bad english writing couple of days...

I walk and think about things all the time alot of times I find the answers to my problems when out walking and thinking about the problem from all angles.

hearing your own thoughts is normal. its called having a conscience - humans have the ability to think things out. The thoughts are going to be in your voice because they are your thought. When you percieve them as someone elses then its considered a symptom of some mental disorders.

Hi

A famous writer states that when the sole of your foot touches the ground, you connect with the soul of the earth, and that's why it's easy to think when walking.

I do most of my thinking and get all my ideas when out walking.

Mmm intresting...
Yes indeed i do think that the voice you can hear is your conscuence but what about talking to yourself with it? As in asking questions for example...
Or just preparing something to say or think something over in detail...

As far as problems are concerend in the area i've heard that for instance walking around without a goal like walking in your room in cricles is a sign of a problem... I don't agree with that but that's one of the things i've been told by nomerous people...

How about acting on your own voice? Like laughing or something like that.

Personally i handle a lot in my head and think it over by walking. At more then one time my mum actuelly asked me why i was laughing (something i was thinking off) or if i'm really upset about something and i'm running it trough my head i can actuelly start making jestures to go by what i'm thinking... Personally i don't think it's odd at all... But since somebody on a board started a thread about this all and we started discussing it peopl's reaction to it and different opinions i found pritty intresting.

That actuely is a very nice statement funnygirl Concerning walking and thinking

I think walking and thinking is a very natural thing to do. For one thing, it takes you away from all of the distractions in your life. It gives you a time to concentrate on the subject you would like to consider. I don't think t hat laughing at a thought is strange. What you are thinking can elicit the same responses as when you are conversing with someone else. Often people make facial expressions in response to what they are thinking. Not much of a difference to laugh over the same issue. This is an interesting subject. Thanks for bringing it up.

When I'm thinking I usually sit and write about it. I don't get up and pace or anything like that, but I do think out loud much of the time.

When I go for a walk outside in order to think, I take a notebook with me, otherwise I forget all the pearls of wisdom that occur to me!!!

bipolar_bear no problem... I find it quite intresting too because people have such a different opinion and experience with it.

I personally don't think it points to a problem like i said earlier in my case it's actuelly good... When i'm really frustraded about something i find that running around a bit and thinking about the situation that was frustrating is a nice way to get it off my back... Much better then feel bad for weeks about it or work it off on other people...
As can talking to your own mind. It can be very helpfull I often do it when i can't forget something...

Hi Up the Aces,

I think a lot of folks like to sort out their thoughts while walking - I do it, too, and find it helpful. I guess I usually just think while walking, rather than talk out loud, but that may be because I'm a pretty quiet person in general. I do see people talking out loud occasionally as they walk, so I am 100% certain you have company in this! I also used to work with a really wonderful woman who would think out loud as she was trying to solve problems in our office. Usually she would ask herself questions as she was figuring things out.... "Now, where did I put the account ledger?" or "Does the $100 belong in the office expense account?" for instance. She was a really wonderful person and she used to joke that when she answered her own questions out loud, then we should start worrying! But truly, it sometimes helped her problem-solve to say things out loud sometimes in her working process. She was a very nice, thoughtful, caring person - we all liked her quite a lot. Everybody has their own unique ways of working things out.

Take care,
ErinBear

Oh ErinBear

I'm sure your colleague was a lovely lady, but I once
shared an office alongside a woman who worked aloud and it drove me nuts! I simply couldn't concentrate on my own work when I was being forced to think about hers simultaneously.

It gradually got on my nerves so much that I managed to get moved to a different office. The woman was so nice that I didn't have the heart to tell her to button her lip, and I suffered in silence for months.

I'd be very interested to know how you managed in that scenario; it obviously didn't bother you.

Hi Funnygirl,

She only talked out loud once in awhile (maybe once a week? I don't really recall). It wasn't a very frequent occurence. I knew she was very deep in resolving a problem when it happened. I just kept working on my projects and she'd just usually say one sentence and that would be all....not a lot of talking. But sometimes asking herself one question or two out loud seemed to help her get past whatever "block" she was having. I knew it helped her and it was no problem for me! If she talked quite a lot that might have been different, it's true. We enjoyed friendly visiting at the start of the day, or when it was time to go home, etc., but that's different. She was really a nice coworker - it was a pleasure to work with her.

Take care,
ErinBear Concerning walking and thinking

Oh no, I sometimes answer my own questions out loud, "Where did I leave the book? Right after I sat down to talk with my mom, I left it on the coffee table. Ok, now to the coffee table i go." Of course I usually manage to keep it in my head if others are around.

I am not quite sure I understood what you were asking but here are my thoughts and experiences....

I constantly think out loud, I have full blown converstations with myself both out loud and in my head. I even talk to myself in the mirror. I do talk more to myself when I am standing or walking about. It does help me to stay focus and work through a problem or thought. I do have converstations with the different parts of myself as well. Just all helps me survive the day, memories, and stay focused. I also have held onto my childhood imaginery friends and will still have conversations with them as well. Works fo rme, LOL...

Yes.... walking and thinking is a GREAT way to resolve problems - for it is a scientific fact that physical activity helps to release stress from the body and from the mind.

So........................ walk for your MENTAL and PHYSICAL health.
Good Luck -
