Not from the shock itself...as I think that is neglible.((Trying to find out.)) ( Kind of like testing a 9v with your tongue Opinions, please. Elec. shock therapy 4 kids who act out. ?) If they aren't able to come up with "proper" behavior on their own... who decides on which aversion therapy is acceptable and which isn't?

The answer I'm thinking of would be in the research labs for a long time. I believe that preventative measures will be the ticket in the future? Before birth.

It has been around a very long time (aversion therapy) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aversion_therapy

I'm not sure the media has the right terms. http://www.opacity.us/forum/viewtopic.php?t=421

Yes, it definitely does remind someone of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

I have actually met someone who had the ECT treatments. Before he had them, he was a very successful principal of a school. Afterwards, he couldn't even understand common sense or simple little things! And that was even a few years AFTER his ECT treatments!

I am totally against this!

IDK if it's a wrist shock or ECT. What I'm reading talks about two different things! I think ECT is somewhat barbarian, too, in a way. But for some ppl who had no other relief, who am I to judge?

aah shoot! Do you mean to tell me all of this time the son has been giving me problems I coulda just put a dog collar on him and zapped him? Wow, bummer I didn't know sooner. And then, first chance he got he would be doing as much or worse to me. We reap what we sow.

A year ago I endured 6 ECT treatments in a 2 week period. I have lost many memories for about 6 months prior and about 4 months after the treatment. Gone - never to be recovered. I had to learn to cook again, to use the computer. I could not do simple arithmatic. My husband said I became such a dunce. I gained so much weight because I did not remember eating and had no perception of what I was eating. All ECT did for me was cost a whole lot of money and give me a bad headache.
I know regrets are useless, but I wish I never had the ECT treatments.

I think this sort of treatment on children is barbaric.

Sabrina, I am sorry for your experience and I am sorry for my callous post above. I was being sarcastic and that can hurt. Please know I was shooting off my mouth without the benefit of brain.

I have seen people who have had ECT and memory issues. I personally think unless it's a life or death choice, forget it.

We hear a few success stories here and there. Someday our future relatives will look back at the way we treated these ailments as barbaric, just as we think of leeches and blood letting. Actually, that has become another interesting topic so lets go for Freud telling his friends to use cocaine, not wise advice.(or was it heroin)

Oh, I did not read your post as callous. I have a very tongue in cheek sense of humour so I had quite a good chuckle actually. Thank you so much for posting though.

Electric shock is appropriate for lab mice for experimental studies into behavior, genetics and such.

Electric shock as a punishment is not appropriate for children, ever. It shows how little responsibility many parents are willing to take for raising their children today.
