Im a 29 yr old mother of 4 children and currently have 2 daughters that have been diagnossed with adhd.... I was a very troubled child myself and attempted to take my own life various times the first being when I was 12. When this attempt was made I was sent to a mental institution involuntarily and stayed there for 2 almost 3 years of my life. I was diagnosed with Bi Polar disorder back then but I must say that I really think that I was misdiagnosed I feel as though I really did have and still do have more of the symptoms of ADD then ever bi_polar anyway my question is How do I go about discussing this with my doctor another thing that should be known is that my mother is also ADD and so is my father. Im going to a new doctor tomorrow and I really want to make sure that I get the help and the medication that will work for me. I just don't know how to tell her that I feel as though I may have been misdiagnosed in the past ya know. I would appreciate any advice anyone could give me. Thanks Khaletha

Well to get the correct diagnosis you need to be 100% honest about what is going on with you and your problems. People here can't tell you what to say to that professional because we are not you going through your day to day life. Just be honest with him and answer whatever questions he/she asks and if you are up front and honest you will most likely recieve the correct diagnosis. Diagnosis techniques and questions are alot different from years ago and more advanced and most times the person who is completely honest and doesn't hide this problem or that recieves the correct diagnosis the first time through.

I think you did a good job of telling us here. Maybe do the same with her. Don't be afraid to tell her everything you know as she will need as much information as possible to give you the best care. Don't be afraid to say that you believe you were misdiagnosed as this happens periodically. Hope it goes well for you.

Well I would like to say welcome, you came to the right place, there are many good people here.

When I was 14, I was diagnosed bi polar by, I think, a doctor who was trying to get me out of his office and drugged up. The diagnoses was wrong, I just recently visited a psychologist......after years.......and he told me that that diagnoses was incorrect. I suspected this for many years.

I would have an open conversation with this T, and be completely honest with what you feel is right.....tell him his professional opinion would help you.

I hope you find what your looking for here.

Khaletha, your most accurate diagonsis will come from a psychologist rather than an MD or family doctor. It might be a good idea, though, to get a referal from your new MD. You'd be seen quicker, I would think.

I'd be more concerned to get a diagnosis for you and your children first and not worry about telling your mother if you think she wouldn't be understanding.

Good luck!

Hi, welcome to PC. Hi Im new here and I need some advice.....
I was DXed with Bipolar and ADD mild, after a "meltdown" 6/7/yrs ago, first thing, was treatment, concentrating on the Bipolar(which runs in my family) before addressing the ADD.
The pdoc(s)felt stabilization was most important, then said they would help address the ADD, that technically has been my problem since childhood, proof was how different things were after taking stimulants (diet pills) while in college, concentration and focus was amazing, making "honors" twice in a row. I barely got through elementary and HS, when it came to math, especially.
Okay, enough of me, I digressed, as usual. What I did, last year, I told my pdoc, and reminded him, of when was he going to help address the ADD, I've been stable and only need minimal mood stabilizer? Before he answered, I told him if wasn't going to help me, then direct me or refer me to a pdoc that works in that area in the group.
Amazingly, he agreed and started me on Concerta, slow release, less risk of extreme up and down thing as the med wears off. His main concern and my former pdoc's was the wearing off end, having the possible effect of extreme, dangerous depression, that had been my main issue with this so called Bipolar DX.
Hey I accept both DXes, and go with treatment,it's working, so why mess with a good thing,eh?
If I were you, I would do what I did, and put it right up front/on the line, whilst still letting them you know there are many people with dual DX and even more.
I also said to pdoc, if there are 2DXes here, and only one DX is being treated, that is ineffecient, you have 2 things, treat both and possible true "balance" in the patient's life can be achieved. I explained I'd never know if we didn't give it a try, he actually told me I had an excellent point.
This was not a manipulation thing, it was more about being heard and assisted in further possible progress that can be made.
I wish you luck, I know how frustrating this can all be.
I'm surprised you pdoc doesn't realize a person can have Bipolar and ADD, guess she needs an update on her education.
Again, I wish you lots of luck with this.
Take care,
DE

BTW I forgot to mention, drop by our Bipolar and even the ADD/ADDHD, you may get additional suggestions and other's experiences with this.

For every psych doctor I've ever been to, they've all made their own separate diagnoses...not really paying much attention to the last doc's diagnosis.

I'm sure once you get in with a psych doctor, they will make their own diagnosis on what you present them with.

Hang in there.

I think by telling the new doc that you feel the dx was wrong is a good start! That way he won't just assume that's what you are (well, because you've been "that" for so long and didn't say otherwise...) you know?

Welcome to PC, you've come to a good place in your life!

(Gotta read everything when you do a poll... fill in places with YOUR words when other prompts are there...etc etc :rotfl")
