I was actually just going to post a thread about misophonia when I found this one; I thought I was alone! The worst triggers for me are eating or drinking noises of any kind, but especially swallowing or eating with an open mouth. I also DETEST the sound of a certain family member of mine breathing, which is hard because I live with them. The thing that started it off for me was food packaging; I remember having issues with that when I was pretty young because I was very self conscious about my weight and even the sound of a chip bag or something similar would make me want to cry or throw up or run away... I guess the sound issue continued without the body image issue. Hugs to everyone; I know how awful this kind of thing can be

Check your PM. Anyone interested can look on Yahoo Groups as well as Facebook. Both have support groups for Misophonia. Search also for Selective Sound Sensitivity or (4S), which ate other names it is known by. Good luck!

Was wondering if any pone uses the same coping skills that I do? I leave the TV on all night to a channel showing all reruns of shows I've seen before. So I can listen, but do not have to watch. Helps me focus enough to sleep. But I hardly listen to music, most of it I find irritating. And all the white noise/nature sounds that are supposed to make you relax and go to sleep are annoying.

I'm pretty sure I have this, but it's because I jump at the noises, like ever since I've started jumping at noises I've become a lot more sensitive to those noises and noise in general, like if they're sudden noises I can't stand them whatsoever and get so frustrated whenever I hear them cos it shoots so much adrenaline through me, and then not as pertinent but still annoying is like the sound of a car engine running, fire alarms etc... the noises that irritate me most are people-made noises.

I share a lot of these things, although most are probably to a lesser degree than you are describing. Like the Styrofoam--I can tolerate it, but it gives me a small cringe. Nails or chalk scraped across a blackboard--now that's a big one! I think fewer things bother me than they used to, although many still do. Kids crying may or may not bother me. If they have that especially loud and sharp type of cry, I want to shriek at the parent, "Get that kid out of here!" However, I don't, because many parents do try to quiet their kids down or take them outside, and I know most parents don't want their kids to be squalling, either. They don't get to get away from it like I can. Some kids don't bother me, though, mostly depending on the mood I'm in, and if the crying isn't that piercing kind of cry.

My bird, Loki, is the most wondrous, wonderful bird in the world. However. When he screeches, it's not a pleasant sound. But a couple of screeches, that I can bear. When he screeches on and on and on, I want to run out of the house. I notice he usually does it when he looks at his reflection in the mirror in his cage (he thinks it's another bird). I told my bf we should take it out (even though I was the one who chose it for him), but he feels Loki screeches less and is better behaved around us as long as he has the mirror. Luckily, he doesn't go into these screeching jags too often. You want to hear birds screeching? Go to a bird store. I mean an exotic bird store, with real birds. Look for the cockatoos...now they can screech, and put my Loki to shame! Check out the macaws, too! Still, love them all!

My boyfriend would be horrified to know this, but I find drum corps and marching bands annoying. I don't know if I could bear it if I were in the stadium, because I can't handle loud noise so close. I don't go to music concerts. I went to a nightclub once for a party attached to a Buffy the Vampire Slayer convention, and OMG, the bands were LOUD!!! Holy crap! My bf and I didn't stay long, and my ears were ringing badly. I was honestly worried I'd damaged my hearing. I couldn't believe there were people dancing right by the speakers on the stage!

I've never heard of jumping at noises as part of a description of it. But an extreme startle response may be something else. Might want to check. I am not a professional. If you look at some websites, the common Miso reactions are anger and irritability. The response to mouth noises is one of the most common
Miso trait. Good luck!

Yes, chewing sounds make me all sorts of stabby and not just in a normal, "oh so annoying" way but like really makes me rage.
