my neighbor's five year old son ran toward the riding lawn mower and mom did not see him. She ran over his foot. He lost his big toe and has had surgeries to help the rest of his foot. He goes back to surgery tomorrow and again next week. He will probably have at least some of his foot saved and need orthodics and P.T. etc. My heart is breaking. He is a wonderful little guy and just bursts with love. He did not like it when the docs told him he couldn't walk for a very long time. Our hearts are breaking and we want to see him, make him laugh. I will go up with hubby saturday when he is a bit more clear. Poor little guy. It is hard for us not to be able to do anything for him. This is really so sad for mom and child. She is already hypervigilant. This will be more devastating for mom. She is a religious woman of deep faith. I hope that she is comforted in this time.

I'm sorry to hear this happened. You just can't do those types of things with small children (or anyone!) around. I hope he recovers quickly.

That's a terrible thing. I hope he's able to walk sooner than expected.

Oh gee owowowowwwww. Kids compensate quickly. My nephew lost the back of his foot to meningitis when he was a little kid and does fine. What a horror for the Mom. She sure has a wad to forgive herself for...... I hope your presence helps.
I wonder what was so important to him that he ran up to her while she was mowing..... ? Good Luck.

Sky, you are right about that. I even make my family keep my dogs in the house when mowing. When my son was little, same thing, I'd have my husband stay in with him.
Hope this little guy makes it alright.

I can't even begin to imagine how that poor child's mother is feeling. My thoughts will be with them both!

That would be so hard for the mom to deal with. Someone in my community ran over his daughter's head with the car several months ago. I don't know how that happened, but it was totally an accident. The child is fine - no lasting damage at all. But that dad is pretty traumatized and needed counseling.

Best wishes for this five-year-old and his mom.

That is really awful. I hope they're both ok.

When I was in jr. high, one of the kids was mowing the lawn and she slipped and cut off her toes. She's ok now, but I thought the event must've been awful for her.

Thanks all. The pain for me is that I can't take theirs away. It is a time of hardship they will need to get through and he will have to suffer. We can't do that for him. Mom is still really wrecked about it. The little guy was running toward the play area and she was turned sideways to him mowing. He ran right in front of her and she had no time to react. He is in a good place for pediatrics. The kids have a very nice special unit. I'll hear this evening how this surgery came out. Thanks for all the well wishes, kind thoughts. Life is hard.

Aaaw, poor baby. I hope he is going to be okay. Accidents happen unfortunately. I'm sure through time and healing the entire incident will be behind him and everyone else.

Pray for him.

Walking their dogs feels like something I can do and it feels good to help. I know the dogs appreciate it. I want to bring him specials when we go to see him. I will have to figure out what would be very important for him. Thanks again.

awww, gee thanks bebop and fuzzy. Yes, I met him when he was in his mom's belly. I have watched him grow and he always has special hugs for me. He is a very sweet child. On his birthday I had my husband and daughter drop off a bag of match box cars and he played with them and tried to give them back as they were leaving. He didn't understand that this was his gift. He needs surgery every three days to pack where his toe was and he gets general for that. Dad says the other toes look pink. Good sign, swollen, to be expected. He will be okay. He is one lucky little guy. My doctor told me I couldn't pick him and his sibs up anymore, to sit on floor and hug and play. It took him a while to get used to it.

I think I mentioned that I played a trick on his big brother whose dad was supposed to get him sneakers when he went on a visit. (oldest is by first husband) He wears a size 13! I picked up a pair of red rain boots children's 13 and gave them to the brother before I gave him the sneakers I got for him. It turned out the the rain boots were perfect for this little guy. They are special people and they are good friends. Thanks for letting me share.

Picture books is my vote for what to bring. Surgery every THREE days???!!!!???? Good grief, he'll be groggy from one to the next, not to mention pain meds.... Maybe later on the books.... a cuddly stuffed huggy toy, personalized just for him, maybe a name tag...... type trip. I really have a hard time seeing little kids in pain.... He probably will have blurred memories of the whole thing. Good Luck.

I agree w/ hillbunny. Something to snuggle w/ is always good for a child. If you notice he will be awake enough between his surgeries then maybe some books that can be read to him. That would also give visitors something to do for him when they visit him.
