Does anybody else do this? I know I'm a little too old to be drawing pictures and writing, but it seriously keeps me sane in my life situations. Recently I have been writing stories, in a journal, and free style poems. I've been drawing women in a fantasy world, with wings, walking their pet jaguars, and riding unicorns. I'm actually getting better and better. I finally just got feet and fingers down, noses too.

I think feeling aesthetic and artistic beauty is therapeutic and relieving. When I draw and write my mind focuses on that project, and that project only. I feel great today because last night I drew a woman doing yoga and looking beautiful and tranquil. Then a drew an angel locked in chains. What do you think?

Hi Desirae,
We have the same name. Only mine is spelled with two E's.

Anyway, I don't think any age is "too old" for writing and drawing. I write all the time, and it helps me alot. I figure, if it helps make you feel better, and its not hurting anyone, then go for it.

As for the drawing, I don't think its perverted at all. Obviously, you have a profound appreciation for the female body, and to me that's awesome!

You are never too old for this, and using art, rather it be written or drawn, is a terrific form of release, it can be therapeutic for, many.
I'm glad you have this gift and find it therapeautic,I hope you'll make good use of this talent, when in need or just as a hobby.
Take care,
DE

I think I prefer the female body because, no offense men, but the female body is more beautiful. I also like to draw mothers nursing, pregnant woman, horses, fantasy animals like centaurs, unicorns, dragons. I also like tribal. It really does sooth me, and it kills time, which I appreciate.

There's no such thing as "too old" for art and writing, as everyone else has said. Some people produce great art, some people doodle. Whatever works for you, go for it.

I'm curious, though: Where did you ever get the idea that you can be too old for art and writing? People make livings doing these things! We should all be paid to do what we love.

Yup sure do. in fact one day my present therapist and I were talking about the writing and drawing that I do and I made a comment that I didn't need bats and shrinky things like that all for sanity all I need is pen and paper and when I said that a poem started going around my head -----

BATS AND SHRINKY THINGS LIKE THAT (written March 14, 2005)

What is it about shrinks?
You can always tell
When you have one that really thinks
or one of those who just want to copy Pavlov’s bell.

As long as you jump through their medicinal hoops they think you’re fine.
God forbid you get one like Freud
Who thinks everything you say has to do with that oedipal line
Most of these fools are so obvious its funny but quite a few have annoyed

Me by pulling out this overstuffed bat
Black handled, thick with hard foam and red.
“You don’t know it but you’re mad, get in touch with it, here hit the chair with that”
Now what would you choose the chair or the shrinks “presumes to know all” head?

Me – I told many of the fools real fast
“forget the chair, give me your head!”.
For how dare she or he (mostly he) tell me how “I” feel about the past
Mad does not cover a man climbing into a child’s bed.

Gee. I wonder why it
Was that all those fools took the bat away
faster than someone could spit?
I know I haven’t heard the last to say

“hit the chair with the bat”
Goes to show how well shrinks think they know me
I don’t need no overstuffed bat for anger and feelings like that
The only bats I need are paper and pen and they will see

What is inside
Is suddenly an open book
In my writing there’s no reason to hide
All anyone needs to do is open their eyes and look

And right before there eyes for all to see
Is the forty-two year old life called - me.

Des, some of the world greatest painters have been OLD men! You're NEVER too old to let your child express itself! Yes, it is therapeutic because you're satisfying the inner child and helping her express herself! There are books and stuff of poetry (ours, for one) and pictures/paintings done by people with mental health issues. They're amazing!! Look at Van Gough! He was "nuts" and his paintings are magnificent!

Keep on keepin' on! You can see that you're developing your talent! Keep going! One day we might all be buying painting or sketches by "Desirae"!! Drawing and Writing for sanity purposes.

If you feel comfortable with it, you could scan your work and put it in the gallery. I'd LOVE to see it!!

Not only do i draw and write, I have special coloring books that I use JUST for me. I have my own basket of markers and crayons, and sometimes I just like to cuddle in bed, with my coloring books, some soft music on, and color away.

I had a WONDERFUL drawing experience in a class i took last year. I actually experienced a shift of consciousness---it was WOW. I know if i drew like that every day, my brain would be so much healthier.

I can post more about my experience if you are interested.

I know that feeling, I just happened upon some string my sister left behind and started to make bracelets agian like a used to. I can make all sorts of bracelets. It helps kill time and helps keep my mind from thinking about negative stuff all the time.

Drawing, writing, and other artistic talents are not just for children, ya know. It's actually a very good way to let out your feelings regardless of your age. Here's a pic you may appreciate:

That's a really pretty painting, Lex.

I love the work of many artists, plus all the graphics you can find. I love fantasy art.

You are right! There is an "Eva" resemblance.

I am not much good at drawing and writing doesn't come easy for me but like BooRadley, I love to colour in. I have so many books and pictures and heaps of stationery. My latest project was colouring Mandalas and I found that particularly soothing.

Creativity and art are wonderful coping mechanisms.

I agree that writing and drawling are great coping mechanisms, I think that's why I do it so much. I often find myself trying to do something different, something unique. I really like writing poems to, although others may not understand them because they're directed towards me and my own personal experiences, I have a lot of undercover stuff only I would know, but that's the whole use of poetry.

I think music does has the same effect as well, another coping mechanism I've taken up is playing guitar, I really enjoy plucking around and playing my favorite songs and chords, makes me feel proud when I learn a song.

Oh yes ... music definitely helps me to cope. I am an amateur opera singer and while there are days I cannot bring myself to sing, there are other days when my singing brings me so much comfort that I am on a high for hours.

I wish I could do real art. And sing. I love both. Here are some links for those who want them:
