My brother, who lives in semi rural NC, dog "Misty" got nailed by a copperhead, she was in very serious condition the vet said yesterday morning.
She is back at the emergency clinic, news changes from hour to hour, at the present things are looking a teeny bit better.
I pray she makes it, my brother and his wife are so devastated, what animal lover wouldn't be.
Anyhow, can y'all send some vibes/prayers an/or well wishes for Misty's recovery.
Thanks so much,
Roe

Please tell your sister to keep a bottle of turpentine on hand at all times. When an animal or person gets bitten, turn the bottle over and put the opening of the bottle right over the bite at a 90 degree angle.

It will burn like fire but you will see the venom sucked out and up into the bottle of turpentine. I've seen my Mom doctor our animals over and over with it and they all made it. Funny how smart the old timey folks are.

Hugs,

Jan

Yep, you got that right, but the strikes were above the eyebrow, and muzzle. Please send good vibes
Poor brother, didn't know about the "does and dont's", he applied ice pack to swollen area, vets say do not do this, it allows more damage from the venom to the muscle(s).
Another sad thing, but I do not want to hurt him by saying this, any time wasted is not good, he should have gotten the dog to the vet immediately, not an hour later, with the thought, "we'll wait and see".
As with a child, one needs to do with their pet, the second something happens like this, get the person or animal to emergency services ASAP.
Oh well, I haven't heard from him this evening, so I hope when I do it will be good news.
Everyone, please keep your fingers crossed.
Again, thanks everyone for your supportive replies.
Gratefully yours,
Roe

Oh, all of you thank you, thank you and thank you. Please send good vibes
This morning Misty was up for being intubated, as the hours passed they called my bro and said in spite of the swelling, she was able to breath on her own, blood work came back good, so we pray all is a good sign, but other than that doc says she is still not out of the woods. Please send good vibes
Fingers crossed everyone and more prayers needed.
We thank you all for your good vibes/prayers/thoughts, my bro didn't know we had 3D support, he says "thanks" to you all.
Gratefully yours,
Roe

I'm sending my best thoughts for Misty. I hope she continues to do better and I hope she has a full recovery. I hope it's a quick recovery, too. I wish her much strength.

Yay!!
My bro called today, Misty is home now, my husband is visiting him so they went together and picked her up.
Misty still has swelling around her muzzle and some dark areas around the mouth, it will be awhile before we know what has become necrotic from the venom or is bruised.
Your good wishes I'm sure were a huge factor in her pulling through to this point. I thank you from the bottome of my heart, and so does my bro.
I told him about this website, he is more computer illiterate so he said, "if there is some way you can thank those at the site you go to, please be sure to say, Ed, Elke and Misty say many thanks. "
"He jokingly had to add, "please do that for me cause I do not a freaking thing of how to work my wife's computer, and she is visiting her mom".
We just have to wait and see from day to day how the wounds heal and if the surgery to remove some of the damaged lip will be needed, so far, so good. Fingers crossed as well as my girls have their paws crossed for their cousin "Misty".
We thank you all with lots of love. Please send good vibes

Love,
Roe,Ed,Elke and Misty

dee, i've had two dogs that were bitten by copperheads and it was a bit of touch and go but they both made it. copperheads are nasty little snakes. very aggressive. i finally taught mine that you don't run up and sniff....you kill. then sniff. then i started finding snake parts all around.

misty is lucky to have this online support. Please send good vibes it looks as if everyone was really pulling for her. i believe in this stuff. keep us updated. xoxoxo pat

Everybody, thank you, thank you, thank you!! Please send good vibes Please send good vibes
I told my brother to try behaviour modification, after her recovery, by getting a rubber snake, put it on the floor, as she approaches it, either give her a cold spritz from a spray bottle, or better yet shake something that mimics thunder sounds, for she is petrified of thunder.
Whatever, I hope he gets a handle on where the snakes are sneaking in, he suspects they are under his porch under his screened in porch. Needless to say, he is not ready to go looking under there. Old wive's tales of moth balls, repellents really are not effective, he will need to bring in professionals.
We had friends that lived at the bottom of the mountains in NY state, the area was full of rattlers, a team came in gaffed and bagged as many as possible and took them away, I can't remember what followed after, except I told our friends stay away from there, scope the area outside their back door and do not allow the dog to be out alone.
Misty was behind her fence but those freaking snakes slither right through.
Misty has caught and ripped apart many snakes, luckily they had not been venomous, till last week.
Again, we thank y'all from the bottom of our hearts, it has meant so much to recieve your well wishes and prayers.
Bless you all, good people. Please send good vibes

Love,
Roe

Roe,

Sorry I haven't been around to hear about Misty until now. I am so glad that Misty had the strength to fight through the snake bite. I started reading the post....praying that by the end, it would be a good ending to read about. I am so relieved that everything went well & hopefully the residual damage won't be bad enough to need the surgery.

We have rattlers & the mojave greens here in California. There were many found at the ranch where I used to keep my horses. They would hide under the horses water buckets. I would also find many of the dead babies laying around where the ranch cats left them after killing them. I was very luck that my dogs didn't go near the live or dead ones...the venom of the dead babies is very lethal. Your post is making me aware that I am going to have to be very careful with all my dogs once we get moved to Kentucky in the near future. It doesn't seem like there is any place that is in the country that is safe from those harmful snake critters & probably many other critters that I don't know about yet.

It is such a blessing that Misty came through the bite so well....& It was such a relief to read that she is doing as well as she is. My prayers would have been here earlier had I been here to earlier. I hope that their behavior modification training will be successful....but don't think she will ever go after a snake again....unless it sneeks up on her without her knowing it.

Glad for the great outcome,
Debbie
