i never thought that my father has any problems because he never speaks about himself plus he seems to be satisfied and happy with his life but when i was 17 my mother told me that they met in a psychiatric institution, where my father was hospitalized for 1 and a half year. all i know about it that he tried to kill himself, that is how he got there. we don't speak about it. my mother was there also with agoraphobia, that is where they met
![]() i respect their decision about not telling me why he was there but i hardly know about "healthy" people who needed that much medical attention and later they have an absolutely normal life. ok, i see some problems now, he dont have friends, maybe just me and my mother but otherwise he have a quiete successful life, he like to be alone. so, my question is why on earth they can keep u in a hospital for 18 months? i mean i attempted suicide and after 2 weeks they kicked me out because there was not enough bed ![]() |

Well the insurance companies are what cause today's patients to be kicked out regardless of need. Back then it was not so. But also today we have some very effective medications. I do not see any real reason to not ask what the diagnosis was, as some things do "run" in the family. The stigma was horrible back then and very shameful.
