Parental absenteeism?

I would appreciate if anyone could suggest books on the psychological effects of parental absenteeism on an individual (females specifically, if possible). An absentee parent in this case constitutes a parent passing away (naturally or unnaturally), abandonment, et al..


Howver, though I doubt I'll find anything specifically concerning the effects of one parent absent due to neglect and one parents absent due to suicide on a young female (for multiple ages ranging from 5-15), this would be exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

I think you are on the right track, and that the psychological effect would be a feeling of abandonment, lack of nurturing, etc.

I would look for books about abandonment or even better (to me), books about attachment.

You might also consider books about child development.

I've hitherto read both Jung and Freud's complete works and Durkheim's Le Suicide; nothing really in the purview of psychological effect of suicide and an a absentee mother on young females!

I recently learned that an older female friend of mine (She's 28, I'm 17) -- when she was under the age of 15 -- had a father suicide and an absent mother (unsure whether the mother was inherently neglectful or whether her absence was catalyzed by her husband's suicide). The woman is seemingly pleasant and maintains a blithely attitude concerning life, a life present with mind altering narcotics such as marijuana and vicodin, and frequent sex. To illustrate, she filmed herself having sex and sold it to an adult video company. I have reason to believe this is her modus operandi in reaching a high level of fame and recognition, tantamount to Kardashian's approach. So far, (and to her dismay, I imagine) I don't believe she has even a modicum of said level of recognition.

At any rate, to each their own, I suppose, but her story intrigues me to the point where I must explore whether or not her parent's actions fomented her current disposition and whether her having frequent sex and drugs are concomitants of being "victim" to absentee parents.

Also, though she has mentioned she does not regret her putting out a sex video, her drug consumption, et al., she is likely not psychopathic, as I've seen and heard of her altruism and warmth towards her close friends; clear incongruity with Hare's PCL-R.

I'm more concerned with minors being exposed to pornography. Are your parents aware of your association with this woman?

David Waller's book on Attachment is pretty popular with people here. The psychology forum hated "The Emotionally Absent Mother" that I recommended - I think some of them buried it in the backyard, they found it very triggering. It had a lot of lists, and it was too depressing to keep answering no no no... I have been looking for the same thing. I don't think it's as popular a research subject as the similar thing for boys, unfortunately. Sexism in research or what, Idk. I have seen the odd article saying that it affects a girl's gender identity formation. I would agree with that.

I would highly recommend "Attachment in Psychotherapy" by David J Wallin.

I hope your friend can find a psychodynamic psychotherapist to work with to help her understand herself, what she wants from life, how to get them.
