(I hope it's okay to post this here. Some may find it sad.)
I wrote this as a tribute to the children who lost parents on 9/11. I felt they needed a voice. I was honored to have it read at a tribute to firefighters on the first anniversary and thought I would share it here. CRAYOLA FLAGS The top of my new box of crayons ripped when I opened it. I tried not to cry. "The country needs extra flags" Daddy said when he came home for the first time since the bad men came. He gave me a bag full of colored paper, glue, and sparkles and I got to work right away. The first flags I made were small. They were for the little kids on the planes that crashed and knocked the big buildings down. I figured all the little spirits could fly down and pick out the ones they like best. I could almost see them waving, high above in the clouds. The wind is best in Heaven. I made a bunch of extra flags just in case Heaven was sold out like Wal-Mart was and I asked Daddy to bring them to Ground Zero. He smiled but I could see his eyes were sad. He picked me up and hugged me hard, just like I do with my teddy bear when I'm scared. His sleepy eyes were smudged with black smoke and I didn't even care if my jammies got ashes on them or that his beard scratched my face. I was just glad to touch him. He carried me all the way to bed and I felt safe in his arms. He got down on his knees with me when I said my prayers and his tears splashed mud-drops on his knuckles. I prayed extra loud so God could hear me over all the other noise in the world. First I asked Him to keep everybody safe until my Daddy could dig them out. Then I asked Him to give my mom a good map, so she wouldn't get lost on her way to Heaven. But I bet if you get picked to be an angel, you'll find your way no matter what, even if you have to go through the flames of Hell to get there. Gramma said the hand of God would be reaching down to help the dead people find their way but no matter how hard I looked I couldn't see a hand. All I could see were the big scary planes, smashing into the towers over and over again. Even when I closed my eyes. Smash. Mommy was a very important firefighter and went to help. Daddy said she got trapped inside with the rest of the firefighters and had to go away. He brought home her fire-girl helmet and I made a special flag for it. I put sparkly stars and bright red and white stripes all over it. I pasted a picture of Mommy on the front of it before I brought it under the covers with me. I rocked it like a baby and whispered, "Shh, shh," like Mommy always did for me. I closed my eyes and watched Mommy help the new angels climb the dusty rescue ladder. The halo on her fire-girl helmet lit up the gray smoky clouds so all the brave people could finally see the hand of God. © 2001 SJN |
