I had hypothyroid for many years without treatment because of my diagnosis of depression. I had the labs for hypothyroid and I had the symptoms. But they said the symptoms were from depression and if you have bad labs without symptoms they don't treat....

Sometimes you cannot win.....

I'm an RN and have seen it all. I don't allow doctors to "blow me off"! I tell them how I'm feeling and put myself right in the middle of the treatment plan. I'm fortunate to have an excellent pdoc, who will ask my opinion about any change of meds.
When dealing with your health care, you have to speak up and have a say in your treatment.
It's your right to say "NO", if you don't agree with the doctor. You also have the right to make suggestions and discuss what you feel will work.
If a pdoc ever laughed at me, while I was in a crisis. I would have his head spinning in a heartbeat.
I may have an illness, but I'm far from crazy!!!

I don't allow doctors to do things to me I have not agreed to. But sometimes they withhold information and then you can't do much. I thought my doc was honest about me not being hypothyroid, it was not until I demanded to read my files (many years later), that I even saw my labs were off and the reasoning around it.

I have also "put my foot down" and been thrown out of three docs' offices. And then I do not mean any type of hostile behavior, just questioning if this is the right care for me and if it is based on the right things. One of these doctors even told his doctor friends not to allow me refills as a punishment, so I had to go without meds for six months.

And no, we do not have any authority to report this kind of behavior to.

Which does not matter. Only one person in the entire health care system has actually believed me about what some docs did and said. Most think I'm "hallucinating" because I'm nuts, right? Even though I NEVER had a diagnosis of psychosis.

These days I know how to play the game, being honest has done me no good. I get what I want from pure manipulation these days. That is how I survive.
