Rocks are fun for dogs at times. Yes, I think many do it to chew and conquer something, but there are also minerals in rocks. Check your dog's nutritional intake by reading the food you're feeding him. Ask your vet about it, if you can't correct the behavior.

My cat sometimes tries to lick and eat things it shouldnt like toilet paper, painted walss and so on. when I took him to t he vet the vet told me it was the equivelent of a pregenat woman craving things like sucking on metal objects, eating dirt. it happens because of lack of iron in pregnant women. so the vet took blood tests and it turned out the food my cat was on was not keeping his nutrients - vitamins and minerals up where it should be. he was basically reacting from being anemic and needing the ingrediants that paint and toilet paper have to make up for his nutricional loss. I changed cat food to one with higher fiber, cerial and so on counts and my cat no longer eats toilet paper, licks my walls and so on very often and when he does I know to add more food with higher iron and fiber to his diet. canned tuna or canned cat food fish fixes it every time for my cat.

I think they just like playing with the rocks.. They don't do it often.. But then you mention minerals.. Maybe they need more minerals in their diet.. I feed them Purina Bentiful Original with Beef.. the ingredients seem to cover everything from protein to minerals.. hmmmmm

I used to buy Iams dog food till I learned they are very cruel to the dogs they use for testing the food.. I did a research paper on animal testing and it made me cry. Soooooo sad what those animals go through... Prob Purina is as guilty.. I just have not found out yet...

My cats eat toilet paper, too. And Kleenex. They must lack something, nutritionally, to do that.

They also eat fringe, string, ribbon...anything that looks like that. Don't know what THAT's about!

I used to live in a "guesthouse" where my landlady had a big dog. When the squirrels would run across the phone wires, way up above the garage area, and they'd poop while they were up there, it would fall into the garage area. It would dry overnight. I saw that dog, many times, eat that. Crunching away like it was a doggie treat. Euuuuuuuuuuu...

They'll eat anything.
