According to this CBS News article (link) entitled "Troops With Stress Disorders Fit For Duty?" states that some soldiers diagnosed with PTSD are being redeployed to fight in the Iraq war.
Goodness gracious! It saddens me that the military psychiatrists, psychologists, and/or social workers that were involved in these individual soldiers' care did not intervene and advocate for these soldiers. These soldiers should have been redesignated to a non-deployable unit or should have been processed out of the military. We have mentally unstable soldiers fighting in Iraq. Gasp! These U.S. soldiers are treated with antidepressants and allowed to fire a weapon in combat in the fight for Iraqi freedom? I don't think stigma of mental illness or ignorance explains "why" the military supervisors are allowing their soldiers to return to duty after diagnosed with PTSD. Apathy explains it. I feel sorry for all involved. |

Well, you know it used to be called "shell shock" and the treatment for it was to redeploy. Now they know that being with their unit gives them psychological support, and removes their feelings of being inferior and abandoning the troops. I don't know that I agree with all that... but I do know that one reason they are being redeployed is that we no longer have a draft in this country, and we just don't have enough soldiers and sailors to protect us and the whole world.
