To me...when I'm depressed, Facebook can be a horrible place. I'm sure it sounds silly, but when I'm in the midst of a severe depression...not thinking clearly....clicking on fb and seeing everyone's "wonderful lives" is the worst. A friend of mine says he feels the same when he's struggling.
I've even gone so far as to deactivate my acct at times. Anyone else ever feel this way. I know it seems strange that an internet site can have such an affect, but that's the reality...for me anyway. |

Oh it's horrible, and the adevertisements are always in the peripheral of my senses.
TBH... when someone drags me over to look at their vacation photos, it's like great for the first photo or two, but they want to show you 100 photos, right? I deactivated my account, or in truth, my account never activated properly, I was silent banned on the commenting system, so if I commented somewhere, and I went to another computer to check, the comment wasn't there. So a silent ban. I was like talking to myself. I generally hate the thing. And dating on there is horrible, the only thing people do is sent stupid gifts and invite you to play stupid games every five seconds. If I wanted to play a game with someone, I'd go play a game with any random stranger, makes no difference to me. |

Do they brag about their "wonderful lifes"? I dunno. My friends complain a lot about bills and politics, about daily stuff... asides for occasional vacation photos, I don't see anybody saying "I have wonderful wonderful life". Then again... I don't take wedding photos as document of "wonderful life"... not anymore then divorce party pho-tos. Maybe it's my country is know to be somewhat whiny in general... or maybe because I am happy for my friends or don't care for some of the things they have (I don't wanna be a lawyer or be married or go skiing in Alps... so I don't envy that really).

I absolutely loved facebook, and once I hit my depression I started to feel the same way. So I deactivated my page (i've done it once before) and felt so much better. It's been almost 4 months to the day, and I have no interest in returning. I agree, it can cause unknown resentful feelings to surface. Also, I was going on there every day and I needed a little space. In my opinion, its better without it. I'm considering keeping my page (because clearly you can't do anything online these days w/o a fb account) but deleting all of my information and pics and just using it as a medium - or maybe just opening a separate account for my business and thats it.

I have a very small friend base that I love on Facebook and the ones that get over zealous with posting that triggers me, I just set the option to not recieve their updates. That way I don't have to see 100s of recipes that I don't need or want but can see what my close friends are up to.

I've had mine deactivated for over two years. I don't miss it. It always made me miserable and jealous.

Most people on Facebook only highlight the positive aspects of their lives. They are sort of bragging about how wonderful their lives are going yet never talk about their setbacks. Keep in mind that the information you are getting on the newsfeed is largely one sided.
I recommend limiting use of Facebook. It pisses me off most of the time.

I love Facebook. For years before Facebook existed, my extended family, which is quite large, had a page through myfamily.com that we used constantly to stay in touch. We migrated over to FB a few years ago and have continued in the same manner. I don't have a huge "friend" base. I correspond with family, some co-workers, and old school buddies. They are all good people. No drama. And we are pretty real with each other; it isn't all flowers and rainbows in our lives. It has been a very positive experience, probably because I use discretion about who I correspond with and who I allow access to my page.

I hate facebook. But have a presence there because I'm expected to.

I deactivated my FB account this time last year, and that wasn't the first time I've ever deactivated it. Being a young girl Facebook is very negative, everyone is basically just trying to prove to other people how good they are (popular, pretty and social) It made me feel really bad about myself but when I took a step back and realized everyone is trying so hard to portray a great life I realized how sucked in everyone is into social status and materialistic items. I'm not like that at all and life without Facebook is a good one! (Y) |

Don't compare your worst times with their best times. And it's possible for anyone to appear happy on FB. No matter what they really feel.

my best friend in the world goes to great lengths on FB to appear as though she's happy and carefree and living a perfect life. the more positive and glowing her FB updates are, the more she's actually struggling and feeling the bleakness. she says it helps. ![]() |

Yup, it can be a depressing site to be at. You know what, I was EXACTLY in the same situation like you 3 years back. I had a MAJOR depressive episode coz my ex left. I actually had some suicidal thoughts but never really act them out.
My ex was right, I loved myself too much. Haha. So chill, just deactivate it. Go out get some sunlight, talk a walk. If you can afford, get a puppy. Animals are therapeutic. Am partially recovered from my depression like 70%. Yeah sad part, I got no real friends. Oh well, c'est la vie. Be well & prosper. |

You are the same as me on facebook then. I dont like to do lots of click likes and shares. I just like to see what everyone is doing day by day.

Sometimes it feels like everyone is playing happy families on facebook and going here, there and everywhere and having fun. I wonder it is like behind closed doors with some of these families. I understand totally what you are getting at because I am the same way.
