If you have experienced chat problems (e.g., cannot get into the chat room), please post to this thread with the following information:
<ul>[*]Your Internet Service Provider and how you connect (modem, cable, DSL?)[*]The Web browser and version you are using (Choose "Help", then "About" from your Web browser's menu to find out the name and version number of your Web browser)[*]Your Operating System (Windows XP, Windows 98, 95, Mac OS X, etc.)[*]What, if any, message you receive after you've clicked on the "Chat" option on the top menu here in the forums. A new window should open and it should show a little Java symbol, and then tell you it's connecting.[*]If you know it, what version of Java you're using[/list] Thanks.... Myself and others will try and individually troubleshoot your problems in our free time. John

1) Earthlink, modem-dialup
2) Internet Explorer 6.0 updated versions: SP1, Q828750, Q330994,Q824145, Q832894 3) Win XP (professional) 4)"Error occurred during initialization. Please check all the configuration directives syntax (sic) availability of required resources such as images and sounds, and Java Console for additioinal (sic) information." ... I do sometimes get the URL loading but even after it's done, I get the initialization error; the screen usually says loading java applelet. 5) I was using Java, tried to switch to Java Lite after the problems began. Now can't get to that screen to change or check it. Any suggestions? I did recently update the Explorer. <font color=blue> Character is who you are when no one is looking </font color=blue>

1. AOL, modem
2. AOL 9.0 Optimized 3. Windows XP Professional 4. It says I need to download Java Virtual Machine....download or cancel. I click on download and it takes me to the Microsoft page which then tells me that I can not download the application. 5. It just says Java Web Start Thanks DocJohn. ![]() Mary Alice ![]() |

Mary Alice,
Do you use Internet Explorer 6.0, and if so, have you done any updates to it recently? Hope you're doing OK dear! My love, Greg |

I think that must be the problem: the updates for me, Explorer. I also cannot get earthlink support because I have to be in live chat with them for security... and I can't get into it either.

bp I just went to microsoft website, and viewed the posts regarding problems... with IE6! I am experiencing many of them... BUT am also unable to contact microsoft... program won't let me!
I tried to download a fix... and it times out. People who tried to uninstall IE6 and fix the problem have even more problems.. so let's not suggest that just yet. Someone like a website expert? needs to gain the ear of microsoft so they will quit ignoring that someone hacked their IE6 and updates OR they wrote it poorly???? Whaddya think? <font color=blue> Character is who you are when no one is looking </font color=blue>

I hate to even suggest this, but has anyone thought they might have a virus, that coudl be eating there java scripts..
those kinda worms are out there and can cause problems in IE6 and lower version.. Run a virus scan and go from there.. I am replying to you Doc so maybe you can check up on this for me also.. I can get into chat, but maybe this info will help others also ??? <font color=green> The Toa pours our everthing into life -- It is cornucopie that never runs dry. 1) Cable
2) IE 6.0.2800.1106.xp.sp2.030422-1633 3) XP 4) I do not recieve an error - the box pops up, and it displays a chat logon screen, as if I need to log in. If I do, it just brings me to the control panel. Viscious circle. 5) Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v 1.3.1_03 (I found this by going to Control Panel, Change or Remove Programs, and looked for Java....just don't remove it!) I doubt it is a virus, for me, I run stuff constantly on my notebook... it might be something more that is in the download programs for IE6 or it's updates. I didn't have trouble until I got the service pack....

1. If you're getting a login screen when you click on the Chat option, that means the program has lost your "cookie." Cookies are how the forums track that you are logged in and you are who you say you are. It could be a security or privacy setting in your browser that needs addressing, as you should not see a login screen for chat. 2. If you have problems with other kinds of chats or other Java-based applications on the Internet, your Java is not installed properly or your browser has changed its security or privacy settings preventing Java from running correctly. While there is nothing we can do on our end to fix this problem, it is something you can likely correct on your end. You might try typing in "msie java security settings" into a search engine like Google and look for information on helping you re-enable Java properly. 3. A more recent version of the server software is available and I will try and update our chat server sometime next week and will let you know when it's done. It is highly unlikely that this will fix any of the client-side Java problems, however, but you never know!! Thanks, John

You can also always trying re-installing the latest version of Java at:
<A target="_blank" HREF=http://java.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=9504>http://java.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=9504</A> Note that if you're seeing any type of message from the chat server (such as a login screen), your Java is probably working fine. If you never see any message from the chat server in that little center box, then your Java is not working fine and this may fix it. Note this download is for Windows 98 computers or newer only.

Tks I will try downloading and installing this... I had just come in to say that I ran the system review on my computer and found (2) Java environment 1 files damaged. This is the only site that I had any selection on Java use... I'm not computer savvy enough to know much about that.
Sorry for my "impatience" but it just seems to me that ppl who are experts with computers shouldn't have had to take so many weeks to find a fix, or suggest one. I'll let you know if this works. <font color=blue> Character is who you are when no one is looking </font color=blue>

Not yet. The update won't install because of error 1335 cabinet file 'jb14200[1].cab being corrupt. Any idea where that is?
I went into my Advanced internet options... don't see anything missing there. Anybody have other ideas? I'm to the point where I might not know what fixes it, if it does happen. <font color=blue> Character is who you are when no one is looking </font color=blue>

Well, it looks like it's fixed! And, I don't know what did it.... because I got into chat while Java 2 was still downloading and hadn't been installed yet... of course the whole time in chat, with a s/n and a huge number behind it, there was a warning! screen about java applet staring at me.
Tks all. Perhaps this is indicative of how my week will go also? <font color=blue> Character is who you are when no one is looking </font color=blue>
