Some short reading what they mean when they say chemical imbalance:

Biology of depression - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

(Down to the title "Serotonin".)

The only thing is when they get to the Monoamine section they never use the word theory. They call it a hypothesis (even in the link). There are several articles on Wikipedia that address this as a hypothesis and they all address the fact that it is questionable.

It might seem semantical but so many people hold on to it that it seems to me an important distinction. (For those that know the difference )

What is wrong with calling it a hypothesis? It is a much weaker term than theory.

That is my point. A theory would imply there consensus. I think hypothesis is being kind

I've taken Monoamine Oxidase inhibitors, herbal ones, that kick the pants off prescription antidepressants, way more euphoric than stimulants to, stimulating, cognitive enhancement without the anxiety associated with typical stimulant use.
