This is the time of year we often change our signatures. I want to take this opportinity to remind everyone of the guidelines for siggies. Large siggies make it hard for the members who have dial up to load the pages they wish to view. Please be kind and follow the guidelines.

Quote:
Is there a limit to signature image size?
We ask that you keep your images relatively small. As a rule, please do not exceed 125 x 600 pixels and/or 35k for a signature image. This will ensure that the forums load quickly for all users.

http://forums.psychcentral.com/faq.php

Thank you one and all for your cooperation.

January

LOL Tomi!!!

You just right click on the siggy, then click properties. It will show you how big the siggy is. Then you can resize if you need to.

Hugs,

Jan

January,
I would like to thank you for this post. I am one that still has dial-up and any of you that have had dial up knows it takes forever.
The sad part is, DSL isn't available in my area, so I am stuck with dial-up for the time being. Signature Size Guidelines
Thanks again,
Linda

You are very welcome. I still remember my old dial up days. It's so frustrating to wait and wait and wait, ad infinitum.

Hugs to both of you,

Jan

That's a very good idea Pat. I enjoy everyone's siggies though and I'd hate to miss them. That's just me, though.

Hugs,

Jan

This topic was discussed some time in the past, with DocJohn weighing in on it (back when either JustBen or even Dexter was onboard??)

The decision was either the 35k or the comparable pixel size 125 x 600 was acceptable. (which decision I still found confusing Signature Size Guidelines ) IDK if the requirement has changed, due to the server's capabilities. hint hint ?

Right click on your picture... then click on properties...

for yours Desirae, it says 21676 bytes and 459 x 280 pixels.
If we go by the pixel size only, then yes, it's too large. However, if we compute your byte size... it is under the 35k at 21.676k

I agree and default to those who have dial up...(ah I remember the hassle well) and try not to post anything really large (except special occasions???) so the threads load faster for you all. Signature Size Guidelines

Just my POV.

Thanks, sky, and you're right there I'm almost 100% sure.

I think the main thing is that the image is under the 35k for users and downloading.

It's just preffered to keep them close to the 125x600 as well.

thx for remembering that _Sky. we couldn't understand the hostile response we got for basically stating the same thing that January has reposted from the FAQ.

we were told to get over it by other members of the community. it hurt that ppl cared so little for those who aren't able to afford broadband or aren't in areas where broadband is available.

it comes down to common courtesy. there are features that members can use to ignore siggys and avatars. most updated browsers allow one to set which sites it does or does not allow graphics from.

thanks for the how-to on turning off graphics Fayerody. sometimes all it takes is someone listening to us, responding kindly and helping us out with a seemingly simple request.

glad that the community has grown more compassion for the MAJORITY of the Internet users on dial-up.

back on broadband but still freshly remembering the many, many months of dial up.....and posting accordingly with those guidelines in mind!

I used to know one, sky. I'll see if I can find it...I know picasa2 sizes down images really well, but it's alot to download just for that. I'll check and get back with you.

Also, photobucket will size them down, but not specifically just half, quarter, etc.

Get back with you.

OK, here's a site that does all kinds of cool things with images...including resizing to specific, or standard, sizes:

Here's another, more simple site (it will also crop them)

I'm gonna bookmark this one actually...really easy to use by just putting in the dimensions wanted...

To specifically answer your question, desirae...

you're image is 459x280 and between 17k & 18k. the guidelines call for 125x600 and under 35k. In my opinion, it's iffy. It exceeds the height by much, is less than half on the width. However, it is about half of the maximum of 35k. So, it's pretty big.

So, if you want to size it down just a bit, here's an example (I did this at the last site I mentioned):

I want to reinforce the fact that I am discussing siggies. Members often post graphics which are funny or soothing and I ask them to put "Large Picture" or something in the title so that those with dial up won't click on it.

I was not, and am not, addressing these issues to any one in specific. It was just time for all of us to have a gentle reminder.

With the best of wishes for everyone,

Jan
