Hi all~
I've been experiencing words coming out wrong lately. I notice it mostly when I'm at work. When talking to people a wrong word will pop out and I have to say ooops I meant ----. It's frustrating because it makes me feel like I can't have an intelligent conversation. Do you think that can be caused by stress, anxiety, or medical problem? Any suggestions? ![]() |

The only thing I can think of is a stutter, which I don't know much about. Do you think it might be that? Also I think it's possible it could be linked to anxiety, I know that when I'm nervous around someone I'm always saying weird things/making weird noises.
Otherwise, it's probably just a slip of the tongue and I'd say that's pretty common. I'm often fumbling my words. |

I have that happen all the time because of stress or excitement. I am good enough now that I can compare the words (what I said and what I meant to say) and think about them which I find interesting (instead of feeling like an idiot/being upset with myself) as they often are very similar in structure, start with the same letter, etc. I have known myself to "think" the wrong word too, when I'm just talking to myself in my head.

My stepsons tease me all the time and we all enjoy my Pernaisms. Just yesterday son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren were over and I was talking about it being "March" when I meant "May", etc. So today in an email to my stepson about something he would like me to do I said I have plenty of time (until June) since it is only "March".
Go with it, like a cat, like, "I meant to do that" ![]()

I always forget very simple nouns and I stutter on words until I have to say a completely different word, but lately words have been coming out half in half.
It's cold in here- it's hold in cere The keys are broken- The beys are kroken It's something that just slips out, but if I try to do it on purpose to explain it takes me time to think it out. Embarrassing and I don't know why it's happening J |

I do it all the time. Especially when I'm anxious. So maybe you are feeling anxious about something in your work situation right now. I do so admire people who can go out in the world and deal with other people every day.
I can't do it. And when I'm writing, I will forget how to spell simple four and five letter words. But maybe that's just old timer's disease. ![]() Last edited by Anonymous100101; Apr 21, 2014 at 02:39 PM. Reason: the n on my keyboard keeps sticking |

I told my nurse practioner that I was afraid I was in early dementia due to language and memories problems, such as saying the wrong word. She thought it was caused by the meds. I am still very worried but at least I have a possible reason for these problems. You may want to bring this issue to your providers' attention.

There are many reasons why this may be happening. I think the important thing to do would be to speak with your medical doctor about it and rule out anything that could be medically wrong with you.
From there, you can narrow it down to if you are feeling anxious about talking to people, then take your time, breathe and think about what you want to say, and say it slowly. If you have been under a lot of stress, then by all means, it can effect your speech in different ways. Again, do the same thing I explained for feeling anxious. Have you started a new psych med recently? Talk to your pdoc or whichever doc prescribed the med to see if that may have an effect on your speech as well. It's all about ruling things out sometimes to get down to the real culprit. I wish you well! |

I've been told it's likely my meds that cause such problems. I never can get a holiday right, for example. I might say something like, "I really had a nice Christmas" when I meant "Easter"!

I have this happen frequently. In my mind I know what I want to say, but what comes out is so very different and out of context.
I also find that I need to double check and triple check myself when getting directions for anything because, even though I hear what is correct, what my mind sees is something different. When it's really bad, I'll keep repeating the correct thing, but I still get it mixed up. I find this usually happens when I'm in a depressive episode, in the midst of anxiety or when I'm stressed. I feel like my brain is not wired right. ![]() |

Aw thanks guys! Deep down I know what it is - it's my own self doubt with my new job. I'm so worried about messing up or doing something wrong that it's hard for me to relax! I'm so thankful for this job and I know I deserve it but there's always a but...
Do you know what I mean? |

I don't know why but I have always got opposites mixed up. It kind of amuses me but doesn't worry because I have been that way very long. I might say red instead of green, up instead of down and the classic, yesterday instead of tomorrow. So many things I say I will do yesterday. LOL.
These days I forget nouns quite easily. I don't have a real understanding why, I just sometimes struggle with finding very simple words and only nouns. FTD might run in my family and it might start my age with losing words. But I'm not going to worry. Whatever will be will be.
