"Why would a label help you?" A psych nurse asked me this. I quickly said

To read up about it to see what it is and how I can handle it
To have a name for it when I describe it internally
To have a name for it to tell others so they know what it is
To search for people with the same DX so we can help each other

She just looked at me and had nothing to say. But she looked really teed off.

Just get more sleep and fix your diet. You'll be more centered that way

Stop staying up so late, over thinking everything

"There's no such thing as mental illness! All you people just need to stop being a bunch of whiners and get some exercise and sunshine."

"You choose to be bipolar. All you have to do is change your attitude and way of thinking and you'd be fine."

"Are you sure you're bipolar? You don't seem crazy. Are you sure they didn't make a mistake?"

This one was said as one of my cousins recoiled in horror "You have the bipolar? Is it contagious?"

"Suck it up and just act normal. Mental illness is an excuse people use to act however they want with no consequences."

"If you were really bipolar you'd have committed suicide by now like your sister. Quit lying just to get attention."

"If you had better eating habits and tried to be healthier you'd be fine."

Those are the ones that have really stuck in my craw over the years

From my Dad a ret Army Col

There's no such thing as ptsd
A response to a young local vet, we don't know, who committed suicide: He just didn't ask for help.

Yeah, I don't mention that ptsd ruined my life.

'just go to bed earlier and get more exercise, eat right'

Nope still feel like crap even if I am doing a fairly good job of keeping up on that stuff, and if I could sleep earlier and a bit more I would but sometimes even the trazodone doesn't quite knock me out so then I am awake but just sedated. I mean ok sure if I am eating right, manage to get enough sleep for a period and enough excercise I feel better physically in some ways but no doing that is not enough to get rid of mental problems.

'Its not like someone shot you' or 'its not like I was going to hit you' in response to me having extreme reactions to sudden loud noises and sometimes sudden movements...well that's PTSD for you...now if only that was the only symptom of it my life would suck less.

"You see, depression is not real. It's only a way for people to manipulate others to do everything for them. If you give up your depression and get a job I'll help you."

Said by my psych nurse.

I would be more than happy to give my disorders to disbelievers. They can keep them and tell me how they manage.

The weirdness of it all was if I somehow could have just dropped the depression, I wouldn't need to come back for her "help".

'everyone has problems'....I find it insulting I mean come on its not like I am so dense I think I am the only one with issues. However not everyone has mental disorders and being well aware that other people have problems to does not make mine any less severe.

I hate if people say there are others who have it worse than me. Yea of course many do, and for different reasons. But I don't know how that is going to make me feel better. There are people who lost a child but they shouldn't complain cuz someone lost two kids and they shouldn't complain cuz someone lost 3 kids and they shouldn't complain cuz someone lost all their family, pets and home.

Or what? Gr....

Lovely logic.

Exactly, -jimi-! Yes, there are people worse off, but that doesn't mean you're doing okay or that your suffering and problems aren't bad.

I opened this thread to offer the reply, "There are lots of people in the world who are worse off than you. You've got so much to be thankful for. You should be focusing on the positive things in life," but I can see it's already been said.

Yeah, not knowing how good I've got it compared to people starving in Ethiopia is my WHOLE problem.

That's like telling somebody who stepped in dog poo, "There are people who step in bigger piles of dog poo, so what are you complaining about? Just be grateful you're not them, and act like it didn't happen. Why are you bothering to scrape such a trivial amount of dog poo off your shoe? What smell? That's nothing to even worry about."

Get over it, it's all in your head. All doctors want to do is get your money and diagnose you so that you'll keep coming back to give them more money, and finally, get over it and stop playing depressed all the time.

Oh, here's one that really galled me. When I was looking for a job so I could support myself instead of being dependent on a government check, I had so many social workers and others tell me:

"Be sure not to make too much money, or you'll lose your check."

Um, if I'm doing well enough to support myself, it means I don't need the doggone check, right? I'm *trying* to improve my station in life. That's the whole point.

As it turns out, I married a man with enough income to support both of us. Now I can look for a job, and people no longer warn me not to make too much money, because it doesn't matter any more. I don't have a check to lose, which is fine with me. That whole attitude strikes me as trying to keep me dependent so they can look down on me.

To wit:

Most ridiculous things someone's told you about your mental illness?

I find thinking of people who are worse off is just depressing, it doesn't make me feel better to see or hear about people worse off than me, just makes me sad for them.

Yes, the most absolutely vapid question I've ever been asked-

Is it catching? I rubbed her arm and whispered yes just to see the horror in her eyes. I think she's still washing her arm.

It just cracks me up that people who are so stupid they have no idea how the human body of the brain works are experts on how your brain works.

It's a chemical imbalance of the brain...What are you talking about? We don't have chemicals in our brain. Our brains would melt! You really are crazy...

My brain doesn't supply enough serotonin...well, why don't they just give you that instead of all that other sheet? Interesting question.

(Hey, AstaZeneca-still killing people with seroquel?)
